Ford will be unveiling the all new 2011 Explorer later this month. As we lead up to the big reveal, they have been dripping little news snippets and peeks. Today they shed some light on one of the new power trains that will motivate the new 2011 Explorer in addition to a V6.
Ford says their new optional 2.0-liter EcoBoost four cylinder engine will be a class leader in the mid-size SUV segment, achieving at least a 30 percent increase in fuel efficiency compared with the current V6 powered Explorer. In a turn of pecking order, the smaller engine will actually be a step up option from the standard V6 engine. And it might even take a test drive for some who will find the concept of a four cylinder engine in such a large and substantial vehicle a stretch of the imagination. But Ford is confident the extra efficiency combined with no compromises in power will win buyers over.
The new 2011 Ford Explorer will be in Ford showrooms late this year. In addition to more fuel efficient power trains, vehicle weight is reduced substantially compared to the current model. Ford has used a good deal of lighter and stronger high-strength steels such as boron add durability while saving weight. An aluminum hood is used. A one-piece composite structural radiator support is 65 percent lighter too.
