Fuel pump & carb replacement

As for the little clip on the distributor shaft, the one supposed to keep the shaft from coming out with the distributor. They are notorious for not being there, or being found in the oil pan. Whether this is because the pump shaft stuck hard enough, to allow the clip to slide down upon removal, or the clip broke, or someone being in the engine before, and not having put it back on. I've had to pull several oil pans because of the pump shaft coming up with the distributor, and falling into the the oil pan "CLUNK", aggravating as heck! I've only found 2 in all the years, on the shaft, and actually holding the shaft in place. Most usually they are in the pan. As for the metal ring. Looks like what's left of a bearing? a thin metal sleeve? that was protecting something? I can't for the life of me think of anything else in that area? Question did you use your original distributor gear??? I believe there are different diameter gears used over the years, and if the outer diameter was larger then the original. It would very definitely put a side load on the distributor. Making it hard to install, and cause the binding, That ring could be whats left of the bearing inside the distributor, smashed flat, and got thinner and thinner, until it was forced out, and is what you see here??? I've seen bearings mangled into some strange shapes over the years. Extreme pressure, heat, and lack of oil, cause strange things to happen. I like Mike would recommend pulling the pan and being dang sure you haven't harmed anything else. Check the neck of the oil pump as the are pretty easy to break. Ask me how I know.

Good luck and keep us updated.

Yeah I think I’ll pull the pan and replace the pump. I am baffled by that metal ring. It almost looks like what is left of a bearing race but there are none that are supposed to be where it is at. It is a ring, how did it get over the gear or the housing? It is a smaller diameter than both. The only thing there is the stop collar and that spins with the shaft. There was nothing there before. It just kind of appeared.   Notallthere

Just a thought or a wild guess, was that ring that is now on the distributor shaft some type of repair sleeve somebody installed into the hole of the block the distributor housing sits in?  I've never seen or heard of one.  But some of these rebuilders have truly out-of-the-box solutions for odd issues.  And you stated you had to force the distributor into place, and it still wouldn't completely seat.  I'm wondering if it was some type of press in repair sleeve, then when forcing the distributor into place pushed it out of the hole in the block leaving it on the distributor.  The upper (and only) bearing inside the distributor is smaller than that metal ring and there is no way parts of it could come out through the bottom.

If you have dial calipers or a micrometer, I'd compare the old distributor to the new one and look for any differences.

Thought about that but it is impossible. The mystery ring diameter is smaller than the gear. Would never fit over it. I’m totally baffled. Sorrydontknow SCo_hmmthink

It is strange.  Is is steel, aluminum?

Tom, If I recall you are working with a 428.  If so, read this thread in the Ford FE forum on distributor bushings in the block.  They are used as a spacer.  I don't know enough about 428 motors to know if they all had one. https://www.fordfe.com/distributor-bushi...20634.html

I'm thinking that ring was some type of spacer and either the MSD distributor didn't need it or there is a different MSD distributor for it.  When you forced the distributor down the spacer came out and ended up over the distributor shaft.  Running the motor like that beat up the bushing more so now it is smaller than the gear.

HAS to be it. Looks like you solved the mystery 1969_Mach1. Greatly appreciated. It looks like I won’t need it with the new MSD. I’ll check the housing diameters on the original and the new MSD with my caliper. You’re probably right that when it was forced out and onto the spinning shaft, it decreased in diameter. Pretty obscure item that I’ve never heard of before.
Thanks for the fantastic detective work. I’ll be starting on replacing the oil pump and distributor tomorrow so I hope to be up and running by the weekend (depending on when parts arrive). Bravo Signthankspin

Let us know how it goes.  It would be nice if MSD would put that bushing information in their instructions for the distributor.

I stumbled across the FE forum when looking for information about the 390 in my 1956 F100 pickup.  I'm not a member there, but they have a lot of info on FE motors.

Seems like MSD is just trying to save on paper. Same as Holley. I’ll check out that website and see if I can learn some more.

Well, what have you discovered after opening the motor?
