magnaflow vs flowmaster for 1969 mach 1 351w
#1
Hi Guys,

I want to replace my 2.25 inch exhaust with either one of these brands. Any suggestions on pipe size? On a previous thread a few people recommended 2.5 inch and no larger. Also I'm having a hard time decidng between flowmaster or magnaflow. My current 2.25 inch generic piping already has a nice muscle car rumble. I'm using the super comps with 3 inch collector. I'd also like to know if this is a DIY project or just bring to muffler shop.

Id go with Flowmaster if you don't drive it on the highway much, otherwise to me they drone. I also wouldn't go any larger than 2.5 unless you have headers.

Go with 2.5 inch tubing. An X-pipe or at least an H-pipe. For mufflers, that can be subjective. Chambered mufflers like Flowmasters will tend to resonate inside the car. Straight through mufflers like Magnaflow or Borla don't resonate near as much and sometimes not at all. Regardless of type also use tailpipes to reduce interior noise. If you decide on Flowmasters get something with their Delta-Flow technology to reduce interior noise.

A lot of people claim the straight through mufflers have the least power loss.

I have Borla mufflers on my Mach 1, 2.5 inch tubing front to back of car and an X-pipe. I'm happy with it.

Regards,
Mike

I have Magnaflow on my 69 351 W that was stroked to 410. I love how it sounds. There's a bit of resonance at around 35-40 mph, but I'm fine with it. Here's how they sound under full throttle at the drag strip.

The sound track playing at the end while the time slip is displayed was the car recorded with an external microphone from inside the car with the windows closed. (The GoPro was on the roof and I used the microphone in the car to avoid the wind noise).

Everyone has their preferences, but I'd buy these again.

Definitely I would go with the Magnaflow as the Flo Masters suck! I know they have different series, but I still can't get the sound of the originals out of my head. It sounded like a late seventies GM with a quadrajet 4 barrell and the air cleaner lid flipped over, trying to suck the hood in! YUCK! Just my opinion. Give me a set of Smitty's / Glasspacks. Any day. JTS 71 Mach1

Thanks I'm leaning towards magnaflows with 2.5 inch pipe. Quite pricey though around 700-800 for kit

Btw is the magnaflow kit installation a DIY? I have a small mig welder and already welded 3 inch collector to 2.25 inch pipe. The only piece I didn't touch was mufflers and tail pipes

It should be pretty much a bolt on with some massaging for perfect fit I would think you should be able to tackle the job without much trouble. Hope it helps JTS 71 Mach1
