Hood Blackout
#1
I am in the process of repainting the hood on my 1970 Mach 1 Dearborn-built car. Is the black hood stripe a matte or flat black? What brand of paint would you suggest using?

The correct paint for the hood blackout on your 1970 Mach 1 is Textured Low Gloss Black. You can purchase from TCP Global under part number DDL 9381

I too have a '70 Dearborn Mach. I have been working up a detail abstract for the painter regarding all the colors and codes. Here is what I have for the hood stripe:
The stripe and hood scoop are painted a textured, low gloss black.
The original PPG code was Ditzler DDL-9381/92812. However, TCP Global (858) 909-2110 sells DDL-TCP 9381 (SC) in quarts. It even comes with the PPG label. Also, AutoBodyDepot 858-695-2900. Do you need the stripe dimensions?

I remember buying Ditzler paint back in the late 1970's and early 1980's. Ditzler and Dupont were the two big names. There wasn't PPG back then. At least I don't recall seeing or hearing of any PPG products back then. I don't know if PPG purchased Ditzler or Ditzler changed names to PPG.

If you are using anything other than a gloss black finish, make certain it is a two stage paint with a clear coat. If it's a single stage paint they get chalky with age and you cannot get any wax on it.

My 69 is painted with single stage acrylic enamel with a gloss hardener. For the reasons above I went with a gloss black finish on the hood. The gloss black is not original but the paint type is, so it's close enough for me.
