New to forum (and Mustangs!) - drsharp - 07-08-2018
Greetings all!
Here I am a newbie both to this forum and to Mustangs.
I just today picked this up (see attachment). My two kids, my wife and I are gonna (slowly) rebuild it.
Lots of grand ideas, and very little experience. We'll see how it goes. The learning curve starts. Whew!
Anyway, hello all! I'll be around (when I'm not under the hood).

Hey drsharp Welcome! Looks pretty good at first glance. We've got a member here, Rare Pony who has a 73 White drop top, very similar to yours. It's been a while since he's dropped in, but maybe if he sees yours he'll get inspired. Enjoy the Forum Lots of good people, and lots of info. Jump in anytime, we can always use another voice.

Full restoration actually. It's gonna be a family activity for the next ?? months/years.
I'm going to strip it down and build it all back. Ironically, it runs ok now, so part of me feels weird stripping it fully down but the goal is the journey, and so we'll dive in with both feet. The hoped-for end product is (a) a whole lot of awesome memories and family time, and (b) a seriously sweet looking and running 'stang that we can go cruise in now and then.
l'm probably in over my head, but no guts no glory, so here goes. :-)

BTW, I also like it the way it is, but I want the experience and it needs some TLC in some ways, mostly the interior. The full extent of how much we'll do remains to be seen.

If I had to guess, just from the pics, it may not be as nice as it appears, as I can see from the pictures, the front bumper is pushed back in the center. It should have the same slight V shape as the hood. It appears pretty shiny, and looks to have been repainted. It also has Mach 1 decals. Ford never made a Mach 1 Convertible. Thus it also has the Mustang script on the Fenders, which a Mach 1 did not have. I don't want to rain on your parade. but it looks like one, someone dolled up??? I hope I'm wrong, and it's as solid, and looks as good underneath. Here's Hoping.

It is a nice looking car. Apparently it had a pretty good quality repaint at some time not long ago. JTS confirmed my suspicion about a convertible Mach 1. I'm more of a 69-70 person so am not very familiar with 71-73 Mustangs, but I thought Mach 1 decals on a convertible was out-of-sort.
I think I'd maybe tackle the drivetrain and suspension first instead of a complete ground up restoration. Maybe fix other small things it might need. You know, one thing at a time. Sometimes complete restorations can be jumping down a rabbit hole. I've done a couple complete restorations, most often when you dig down you find most all parts and fasteners still operate and look okay, not like new, so you frown on reusing them with a complete restoration.
Anyway, there are a lot of 71-73 Mustang owners here. so you should find any help you need. If you are new to these Mustangs, getting a set of reproduction Ford shop manuals is a very big help. They contain a lot of useful information.

JTS, you are exactly right. I'm totally new to all of this but multiple other people on other forums confirmed that the Mach 1 is most definitely NOT original. And yes, the paint job is not original (they painted over the VIN decal on the door frame (grrr).
Also it has an Edelbrock carb conversion, so someone clearly did some stuff with it.
What I'm still confused about, though, is: what _exactly_ would have been included in the Mach 1 package for cars that originally had it? The reason I'm asking: did someone just put the decals on the car or did someone actually install the Mach 1 package as well? What should I look for?
And yes, the front bumper looks to have been slightly pushed back. I'll have to rectify that.

First thing I did was order the 1972 shop manuals (on CD, which is nice). I'm wondering if it's useful to also get the Chilton's and/or Haynes manuals or would that be redundant? I welcome any advice on that.
Also, I hear you about doing the drivetrain & suspension first. I'm still wrestling with that. There's some obvious fixes to make it driveable. It has some electrical issues as a couple things have killed it (once I pulled the knob to turn on the headlights and the car died, for example). And there's a bad rattling noise underneath when it has a good amount of RPMs but only while moving (revving it in park doesn't rattle). So I'll need to figure that out.
However, the real reason to buy it is to have the experience as a family of a tear-down and rebuild. So part of me is also figuring to just dive in and start that.
I haven't done anything yet really, so we'll see.
