What wheels are you running on your Mach 1? - Mister 4x4 - 06-10-2018

Everybody has their own opinions on how their cars should look, whether stock or modified.  Thanks to countless manufacturers and vendors out there, we have and endless supply of options available to get the looks we're after.

So spill it - and provide a pic or two: what kind of shoes are on your ponies?

My '71 Mach 1 most likely came with Corporate 'Dog Dishes,' but since the Marti Report didn't specify and I prefer the Sport Covers anyway, I grabbed a set of these from a friend on 7173 Mustangs.com.  Here's mine with the Sport Caps/"pizza cutter" stock white walls while I was finishing up reassembly:

But, the look I was after was something more like "Day Two Restomod" (how it would've looked had I bought it new and started making it my own shortly afterward).  I scored a set of 15x8 & 15x10 Cragar S/Ss with some 245/60R15 & 295/50R15 Cooper Cobras (BFG T/As were on back-order when I needed tires):

So, what'cha got?!

The stock wheels remind me a little bit of a "sleeper car".  Actually they do not look that bad on your car and probably would look even better without the whitewall tires.  But your current wheels are really make the car.

I originally had Torq Thrust wheels on my Mustang but due to limited backspacing option with that style wheel I now have Magnum 500's on the car.  For the Fairlane I opted for factory steel wheels in the rear and Torq Thrust wheels on the front.  Something different, at least for me.

Looks sharp!

I like the Magnum 500s, and had thought about a set, but I wanted the fat, deep-dish look on the rears for sure.  A couple of friends on 7173Mustangs have 15x10 Magnums with custom back spacing out back on their cars, which looks sharp as Hell... but after seeing just about every other '71-'73 on the 'net with Magnum 500s, I decided to go with the Cragars (also after seeing everybody at the local car shows having Torque Thrust IIs on theirs - which is what I originally wanted, but had to be different, I guess).

The original Mach 1 I fell in love with as a kid had the Sport Covers, so I guess it made an impression. ;)

Pretty much this, but with the same Sport Covers shown above on mine:

You made a good choice with the Cragar's wheels.  I don't think the Magnum 500 wheels would look as good on your car and you are right about everyone having them.  Another wheel that has the correct backspacing and I would put on my Mustang are the Cragar Shelby wheels.  I did not buy them because they were about $350 per wheel not they are north of $500 a wheel.  To me that seems like a ridiculous price to pay for one wheel.

Most of the time - the wheel/tire combo can really make the vehicle.

In the case of both of your examples it would be more the case of having a hard time ruining such nice cars no matter what wheel/tire combo you were to choose.

Still - both of your examples really stand out with the choice that has been made.

My Mach one came with a Shelby Ten Spoke (pizza cutters) but I favor the Magnum 500 even though "everyone" has them.  Time will tell when I get that far.

Hi Steven,

The Magnum 500 is a nice wheel and compliments pretty much all year the Mustangs really well.  They are simple, stylish, can't go wrong, wheel choice for the Mustang.  Hence their popularity.

I have the centrelines which were on the car when I bought it.

I bought these CSA Bathurst wheels which are a copy of the Globe Bathurst produced for Ford in the early 70's.

I think they look good on the XA,B,C's so I will try them on my car when I get some tyres for them

[attachment=12600]Here's my thoughts, on the "ONLY" wheels that should grace a 71-73 Mach1. But I believe I 'am the minority on this one, cause I searched about 4 pages of Mach1's to find a picture of a nice set of "Slots". My 71 Mach1 had 15x10's  with L60's on the rear, and 14x8's with F60's on the front. I didn't have to jack with the suspension, my car had that nose down stance, without changing anything.  Anyone else remember when tires were listed by "Letter Size" instead of the Metric designation???

I was going to ask if that was your car - I've had that picture on my hard drive for many years now.  LOL!

Their isn't anything wrong with a nice set of slotted mags, either.  I'd considered those as well, since my pal Jim had a set on his '75 CJ-5 (came from the factory as part of the Levi's Edition Renegade package), and they look sharp.

I had also briefly considered the American Racing 'Daisies' when I gave up on the Torque Thrust IIs.  This one just spoke to me for some reason:

OK, so maybe it kicked in the door and started screaming.  I love this look, though.

I have never heard of the Globe Bathurst wheels before but think they are a good looking wheel especially on that Falcon.  I also like the tire you have mounted on that wheel.  They look like a bias ply tire.
