My Newest Project - My Youngest Child - Steven Harris - 10-13-2017
Those who have been here (Mach 1 Club) for a bit know that I have been able to help each of my four previous children own and work on a classic Ford of their own.
First there was a 1967 F-250 Highboy
Followed by a 1963 F-100 converted to 4X4
Followed by a 1970 Maverick 5.0 - 5 speed - EFI
Followed by a 1967 Ranchero
The latest for my final child: this 1965 Mustang Coupe. Let the fun begin!
This particular Mustang was sold new in the Dallas, Texas area, has evidently spent the majority of it's life (rust free) in the southwest desert, where my daughter and I picked it up in the Alamogordo, New Mexico area.
Originally it is a 289 V8 2V car (C code) with a 3 speed manual. Black Crinkle vinyl standard interior and color code X (vintage burgundy metallic).
The reason it met it's fate (sitting in a salvage yard field) was due to a driver's side collision squarely on the driver's chassis rail that has left it with a 1" discrepancy in wheelbase length from side to side.
Our hopes is to pull or replace that chassis rail correcting that major issue and begin to bring it back to life. It will be yet another Father/daughter project with a hopeful end of a drivable although perhaps not completely finished Mustang in about a year or so.

Not to bad looking for a 52 year old car. I've sure seen a lot worse. This is where all the years of knowledge, and hands on should help, as you will know what to repair and what has to be new. Fortunately there are a lot of old Ford / Mustang parts available. Just watch Craigslist and Ebay. 2 of my favorite places to find old stuff. But you already knew that.

Hey Steven, I like your new project! I really do miss my 1965 Coupe. It is amazing how clean the cars are out there. You can still see the Ford part number on the front valance.
By the way, I notice the dash where the radio goes has been butchered up for an aftermarket radio. I cut a good section out of another 1965 Mustang if you are interested in the piece. Unlike the guys who sell Mustang parts on eBay the one I have did not come out of a Shelby (LOL)!
If you are interested in repairing that section of your dash you can have the piece. I don't think I will be restoring another car after my Fairlane is done. I will grab a picture or two tomorrow.

Yes, JTS, the years of experience has at least helped me know what I was purchasing. Original, non-rusty V-8 cars are getting harder to find for the budget builder. I have been keeping a eye on Craigslist and E-bay becomes my option if I can't find it "locally".
Mike, thank you so very much for your generous offer. Yes, I will gladly take the repair piece. (Are you positive it wasn't out of a Shelby? - my daughter could really brag about her partial Shelby Mustang!) I was looking and making a list of parts needed but did not see that piece in my (out of date) catalogs.
I hope to tackle the build systematically, step by step. First - sort out the frame, second - the motor/transmission/wiring (I have a good 302 and will use the current 3 speed although one of my T-5's will eventually take it's place), thirdly - suspension and brake repair (no upgrades), fourth - missing body pieces (primer for anything not original), fifth - interior and finally begin paint after it is a running driving car.
All the best plans etc. ....

I like the car and the panel lines look like they line up pretty good even though she took a hit at one point. Plus your build plan sounds like a good one. Tackle the frame issue first then mechanicals. I will post a picture of the dash section tonight after work. I am glad it will be going to a good home.

Sooooo, after this project will you finally be ready to start on that yellow Mach 1 for yourself? Good luck to you in this build. Please post parts you need because I still have a pretty good stash of 65/66 parts as well.

Will I ever get to my Mach 1? What a great question. I still have work to do on my other daughter's 67 Ranchero which was suppose to be next. But seeing how we substituted the little Ranger, and she is now grown and this daughter (16) is next in line, I made a parental decision to postpone the Ranchero. So .. the Mach 1 is at least still one out. The good part is that I have it, it is stored dry and secure - ready for when that day comes!
As to parts needed: hood hinges, inner front floor support, radiator core support, wiring harness, front & rear bumper, complete interior, rims, disc brake upgrade - pretty much in that order.

I trust the little ones get their hands dirty too.
That really brings out the pride in ownership! I remember the good (and bad) times my daughter and I had on her Mach 1. Some things you never forget and forge a bond that will not break.
No wonder you moved to (cheaper) Mexico. Now you can afford to eat AND give your kids cars!!
