I did this to my 735iL (E38) BMW support / DD vehicle.
Power to the relay bank is permanent and fused; coils are activated by the appropriate car circuit. Output is to the socket on the tow-bar.
When future maintenance/fault finding is required how do you know what does what? Easy - The colour of the output wire.
Two major advantages of this system:
1) Trailer electrical load cannot overload flasher units and other switch contacts.
2) A trailer fault will only blow the fuse in the relay - towing vehicle still works OK.

The relays for my application were mounted in the boot (trunk) behind the battery.

Now that is quite the electrical connection for towing!

Maybe that is why my ex used to call me 'OK Salmon' - OK = Over Kill.

It would have looked neater if I had used that black spiral wrap stuff along the bottom. That would divide up the wires to each relay.

Over kill? Don't know what you mean.

Over kill, i think not. That is exactly the correct way. As a ford tech through the 80's,90's and early 2000's I have seen many trailer wiring faults. Some resulting in dashboard fires. Ford gave people the correct wiring harness to wire a trailer. Still. Thanks to the quick blue jumper connector many vehicles suffered unneeded wire repairs all due to incorrect trailer wiring. Great job for doing it correctly. regards John

Thanks for the kind words, John

I have now done the same to my Daimler Sovereign.
The main (only?) use will be towing the TRAIMLER, so overkill again.
I don't care it will be safe and long term reliable. I also used the slightly over-sized power wire to feed a socket in the boot (trunk) that will run a 12v kettle, lights, charge a phone etc..
It is fused at the supply point (firewall) by an in-line fuse.

Sounds like you're having fun. JTS

If it isn't fun I don't do it any more. Too old to waste my time.
I have a much younger female friend who wants to learn how to look after her car and how it works.
We flirt outrageously but I would not 'touch' her as that would ruin the fun we have fixing her and my cars as she learns. She drives one of my 'club' cars to shows regularly, usually with her squeeze. Show days are a real hoot. Especially now I have my 'show' trailer to cart the BBQ etc.
See my first sentence.

Sounds Great! I wish I was to that point about 7 1/2 years away. Then were on my time! JTS
