Correct engine paint for 1969 351w - rindel - 05-21-2015

I'm looking to paint my 1969 351w myself. Preferably with with spray Paint. Cjponyparts sells eastwood ceremic spray paint but it's pricey. can anyone recommend another paint?

Also the current paint is not bad but a new coat would make it look better. How do I prep r paint? Can I simply paint over existing?

Are you referring to aerosol cans of paint or from a paint gun? If you like the Eastwood stuff, you can buy directly from them. It may save you a little money. For aerosol cans, most people just use something from an auto parts store, usually Dupli Color. It's probably not as good as the Eastwood paint. Check NPD, I believe they have different brands than Eastwood.

For cleaning, since you don't want to get water in the motor, I would start with solvent and a parts cleaner brush. It might be messy. If you use any type of paint thinner you might make a mess of the paint that is already on the motor. Then wipe down several times with a Grease and Wax Remover that is used to prep for paint. You need to get that from a body and paint store. I have also seen that at Oreilly's auto parts stores in quart sizes. The Grease and Wax Remover is good to have. Get a gallon if you can afford it. It comes in handy for any type of paint work, small or large.

It sound like you are just cleaning up the motor. If your motor is out and on a stand, I would replace the freeze plugs if they are old.

Best Regards,
Mike

I have used VHT engine paints with good results. The '70 is painted in what they call 'Competition Blue'.
I just degreased, machine high pressure hosed off and air line blow dry.
Lasted about 5 years.

thanks i think i am going to by duplicolor old ford blue or match up another blue from advanced auto parts for $5.50. The eastwood paint is too expensive at $30. Vht is also available at advanced parts.

Duplicolor makes a great product. I used it on my interior and was very pleased with the results. Also a big fan of the VHT paint...great stuff and very durable.

For a very acceptable finish on factory exhaust manifolds have them sand blasted and use VHT Hi Temp, Cast Iron colour. Lasts about 4 years on a DD.
