My Stang is just a body nothing else. Installing a painless kit went pretty good until i got to the alternator hook up. I do not have a regulator or any existing wiring. I have a 1-wire chrome alternator my question is how to hook it up to the painless kit. painless kit references a regulator and a standard alternator. My goal is to avoid the rats nest of regulator wiring. My car is more like wiring a hot rod starting from nothing.
Hey KT.

Not sure what help I can give.

I believe that we do have a few guys who have done a one wire alternator and have posted their work.

Have you been in touch with the Painless Wire folks. I would think that they would have some tutorials for your situation.

We would be interested to hear more of the build story if you would like to share it with us.
I would have thought the alternator would have instructions. Most people convert to a late model Ford small case 3G alternator to eliminate the external voltage regulator. Good luck. Somebody should have some info on your situation.

Here is a link to Powermaster with a little information on connecting one wire alternators. It seems simple. http://www.powermastermotorsports.com/fa...rs.html#15

Thanks for the links. The one wire alternator is basic to hook up. My dilemma is what to do with the wires that painless includes in the harness to hook up to the regulator and original style alternator. Instructions have me hooking up the two of the headlight wires to alternator connections which I do not have on the 1 wire alternator. I agree time to give painless a call and test their customer service. Unfortunately that has to occur during normal working hours....errrrrrrrr. As for a regulator none in this car.
Does your car have a factory tach? If so, you probably will not get the alternator warning light in the dash to work with a 1 wire alternator. If not, and yours has an ammeter (most common) from my factory wiring diagrams, at the A+ terminal on the voltage regulator a yellow wire comes from the + battery cable terminal on the starter solenoid, and at the S terminal on the voltage regulator a green w/red stripe wire comes from the ignition switch. The remaining wires attached the voltage regulator go to the alternator. I would think you can simply remove the wires that go from the voltage regulator to the alternator. Then remove or tape up the other two wires I mentioned, the yellow to the A+ terminal and the green w/red stripe to the S terminal. Taping them up would be easiest and they will be there if you ever need them in the future.

69' fastback....factory tack....Pertronix II going in, battery in the trunk, mini starter, efi PowerJection III...4 speed 4r70W auto transmission....lots to wire. Many overlapping electrical issues with this combo. 500 hp 351 Cleveland, 3V aluminum Aussie heads, 3.75:1 9 inch posi and just to make sure it wasn't to easy I RH hooked it. Add power windows to the wiring challenge. Then stashed the electric fuel pump in the tank. Got to get her wired now.
Wow! A lot of stuff going into it. I had no idea and thought it was just one issue you were trying to sort out. I guess the factory alternator warning light not working with the one wire alternator would be trivial. Sounds like the Painless harness is just a starting point for all the wiring mods it will need. Did that harness come in any way set up for all the electronics you are adding?

I guess start with Painless' support like Steve Harris mentioned. Don't be surprised if they pass you on to the mfg. of the other components from time to time.

Mike

Wow, quite a list of work and those two would suggest that we are dealing with a non-U.S. build. (I hope you were able to make good use of your buying power back a few months ago!)

Anyway, calling Painless etc. may not be as straight forward since I was assuming that you were stateside. Although I imagine that they would still be the ones that would have the specific answer for you.

Share some more of your build with us. It all sounds very interesting.
I am stateside this one goes to my mate Mick in OZZ when its all done and I have taken it out for some smoking fun. My Stang project sets next to it a 73 vert going Europa Shelby tribute on it. It has 351-C also.

Hope it isn't going to South Australia they won't let it in.
