Trying to pinpoint a problem on my 71' Mach 1 door windows. Manual crank style windows.

With the door open, and the window rolled completely up, the window is solid and stationary. When I apply downward pressure on the glass it does not move. The window also rolls up and down freely.
This leads me to believe that my regulator is in good shape.

With the window rolled part way down, the glass has play fore and aft. Grabbing the window I can pivot it toward the front and rear of the car. The glass appears to raise and lower about a .25"

Looking at the upper window guide, it appears to have about a 16th of an inch clearance on both sides of the metal rod on which it travels. There also appears to be a slight bit of play between the anti rattle clips and the metal rod.

Would you think that this amount of clearance is normal within the guides, or should they be replaced?

Based on my description of how the window operates, freely traveling up and down when the handle is cranked, fixed and stationary when rolled up, would you feel that the regulator is in good shape? Or, could the regulator be a contribution factor to the window pivoting fore and aft when partially rolled down?

thanks in advance.

It's funny this topic came up. I replaced my driver's side window guide last night due to a binding issue with the window.

Since you can apply downward pressure on the window and it does not move and there appears to be no binding issues I would also assume your regulator and guides are working properly. My guess is the window needs to be adjusted. I believe there is an adjustment that will take the fore and aft movement out of the window but I may be wrong since my experience is with the 65/66 models. A shop manual should outline where all the necessary window adjustments are located so I would start there.

Let us know what you come up with.
MustangMike,
using the ford manual, it outlined how to adjust the window outboard, as well as adjust of the top of the window in and out to meet with the weather strip. It also covered upper and lower window stops.
Unless I missed it, I didn't see anything regarding adjustment that would take out the fore and aft play that my window has.

Let me do some research to see if I could help you diagnose the problem.
MustangMike,
I'd appreciate that. I can see the nylon guides move slightly on the metal rod that they ride upon. It's only about an 1/8" play at the guides, but that exaggerates to about a 1/4" at the top outside edge of the window.

I don't know if the guides are supposed to have any play or be a snug fit around the metal rod.
Okay, here is what I came up with. It looks like the 71-73 Mustang window design was the simplified compared to previous years. There are only two adjustment screws so based on your service manual neither one of them adjusts the fore and aft movement of the window. So, by way of deduction, it appears the only other options are the bushings and/or regulator.

Below is a link that shows the design and functionality of the door windows for the 71-73 model years. There are two white guides/bushings in the picture. Is it possible they may be worn allowing for the play in your window or could they be loose?
