Hairpull
From the wire group exiting the grommet in the firewall behind the drivers side valve cover I have 4 wires that I cannot figure out. They are black, blue/red, blue, and a larger gauge green wire. Had a small carb induced fire years ago but don't think they go to anything. Any ideas???

Thanks!!!
Remind us what year Mach 1 we are dealing with.
Smiliegenerator_test6 We then get an idea of what terminations (if any) are on the wires. Also we can decide if the terminations are factory or after.
If you have a DVM or a test light tell us if any are live and what caused the wire to go live (IE ignition; accessories; parking lights; headlights; some heater function etc etc). Also if any are an earth wire.
I'll double check mine, but if it's the connector I'm thinking of, on 1969 and 1970 Mach 1's and Mustangs it goes to the neutral safety switch and backup light switch in the floor mounted automatic transmission shifter.

For manual trans cars I think there was jumper to bypass the neutral safety switch. Also two of the wires went to a back up light switch attached to the shift linkage on the transmission. Do your back up lights work?

Mike

This is posted in the 2003-2004 Mach 1 Tech Forums, but they don't have carbs. May be posted wrong.
Not certain, I think it is a 1970 Mach 1.

Sorry all....I didn't realize I posted where I did. Yes it is a 1970, and my backup light harness is still hooked up original but no it doesn't work either. All marker lights, interior, and dash lights work, and headlights, turn signals.......but no backup, 'running' tail lights, or brake lights. Ill post some pics asap.

Thank you all
Well, there are two 4-pin connectors in that area. One goes to the wiper motor and the other, as I mentioned, is for the neutral safety switch and back-up lights. It plugs into a harness that goes to either a floor auto trans shifter or the manual trans shifter (for back-up lights).

Before jumping into searching for wiring issues, check all the fuses. With the key on and lights on, check for power at the end of each fuse in the fuse box using a test light or voltmeter. If all are okay, make certain the tail light grounds are attached. Just examine the harness in the trunk and you should find a ground wire. Then, the tail light harness plugs into the dash harness in the left dash area. You usually have to remove the dash pad to gain access to it. If you remove the left kick panel you can see the harness but cannot get to the plug connectors.
