I've heard that the only visible difference between 71 & 72 Machs is the style of the trunk lid striping and in some cases 71's had the cool pop-open gas caps. I've noticed that some Mach1's have chrome trim running body length separating the primary color & secondary accent color on the lower portion of the car. It seems to me that this is only the case on 71's Anyone know what the deal with the extra trim is?
I look forward to any and all input,
Your friend,
Keith
Hey Keith my 71 Mach1 had the pop open gas cap , as well as the chrome trim just above the silver lower portion of the car. The rest of the car was Dark Forest Green Metallic. and I knew the car from new so it definitely came that way. As to why ??? The lettering on the fenders simply said Mach 1 with Mustang underneath, and the Mach1 stripe across the trunk. No hood stripe or hockey stripes. It looked pretty plain compared to the other ones with all the stripes. That's all I can attest for. JTS 71 Mach1
Other than the twist-off gas cap, the '71 & '72 mach's rear end treatment (stripes etc.) are identical. The '73 used a different stripe, taillight panel trim, bumper, bumper extensions, and taillights. I've seen plenty of '72's with the anodized metal side trim, as the side (hockey stick) stripe was an option, so it's not exclusive to '71's. 1973 mach 1's used a side stripe only - no metal trim. You may see some mach 1's out there with bright wheel opening mouldings. Rest assured they didn't come that way from the factory - at least not in 71-72. They were part of an exterior décor package on standard sportsroofs, coupes, and convertibles.

That's very interesting, I love the look of the extra trim but with the hockey stripes it might be a bit much. Thanks for the trivia about the wheel well trim as well. On a side note occasionally I see a 71-73 Mach 1 with no hood black out. Is it a sure sign of a repaint or could you order "Black-out Delete"?
Thanks

Keith
If you're referring to the two - tone paint treatment you see on most mach-1's these days, the answer to your question is no. That hood treatment comes standard on 71-73 mach-1's which are optioned with ram air. It was also an extra cost option on 73's without ram air. As most mach-1's did not come with ram-air from the factory, they did not have the matte black or argent paint treatment on the hood. Also included in the ram-air option were the twist type hood locks. Most mach-1's came with regular painted hoods. If a 71-73 mach-1 was factory-equipped with the 302 engine, it may or may not have the scooped hood. The scooped hood was a no-cost option on 302 machs, but standard equipment on all larger V-8's.
