Just bought the car at the end of last summer and it's had the problem from the get go but now it's actually to the point that the car will not start. It slowly started getting to where you had to cut the wheel harder and harder and has finally give up the fight. I'm no electrical goo roo. I thought about buying a whole new column but figured it was probably actually something really simple.
Car is a 73 Mach 1[attachment=10610]
New member by the way, glad to be here!
Welcome. Out with the w'shop manual, remove the ign switch and lock. One quick rebuild later - hot and running. I would guess that the fault will be obvious once you get into it. These are very simple vehicles to work on.

Great looking ride too!!
Welcome to the site. Cool ride. I love the ss cragars. Great old school look. Sorry don't know much about that years steering columns. Sound like maybe a loose wire or ignition switch coming apart. The switch is at the bottom of the column. I would do a visual first before i started taking anything apart. good luck John
Thanks guys for your input and opinions. Will check it out and repost when I get it figured out. Until then if anyone else has any other suggestions, I'm open. I don't know about you guys but I can't wait for this weather to break and the leaves to start coming back on so I can get back on the road.
Welcome,

As mentioned above - it should be obvious once you get into it and not that hard to get in to.

Don't force anything, just take it piece by piece.
Welcome to the site. Your car looks great and I like the Cragars, too. Here is a link to upper steering column components. As you can see there is not a lot in there:

Remember to disconnect the battery before working on electrical components...you don't want to end up shorting out something.

Keep us posted.
Nice car I like the Cragers too very old school. I've always thought Cragers look great on any muscle car and make non factory muscle cars look great.
Dug into the column a little this evening and didn't find anything obvious. Ordered a new key switch; it should be in Tuesday. I don't get to work on it much with my work schedule. I go to work at 5:30am and get home around 5:30pm mon-sat. Shooting for having it figured out by next weekend. I'll repost when I get it lined out with pics if needed.
Thanks again for input, Lee
Thanks for the update Lee.

I haven't been able to work on my Mach 1 for over a year but at least I have one to work on someday!

Here's hoping it comes together for you by next weekend.
If I were a betting man I think that will do the trick. Is the key switch the whole cylinder? Good luck and keep us posted.
