Does anyone know what this light is for? I found it behind the dash bezel. It has a violet (or purple) wire and a green wire. I've seen it go on and off intermittently and cannot figure out what switches it on (see picture of light). I also have a dangling green wire by parking break which I suspect could be the parking brake indicator light but my lower dash does not have a cut out hole for this indicator. I have a 1969 mach 1 M code with visibility package and tachometer. The only round indicator light i have on lower dash is seat belt indicator light.
You state you have seen the light come on. Ign on or off? Moving or stationary? Do you have other unused holes in the rear of the cluster? If so, what colour/symbol is the lense? Do you have a HRW? Could that loose wire have earthed out and brought the light on?
That should keep you busy checking!! Biggrin
Have you looked at this........ http://mach1club.com/showthread.php?tid=2262

The single green wire might be for the handbrake switch. Earth it to the body and see if the mystery light comes on.
Hi,Oztrailer. Yeah, I thought of that but then (second) thought - It might blow a fuse. Then we have to explain what a fuse is, what it does, what it looks like and where to find it.
On the other hand, you might well be right!!
Its missing the lense but the socket is red. I figured it out thought. I grounded that green wire by the emergency brake and my seatbelt warning light started flashing. The seatbelt warning light has a yellow socket. So the previous owner must of put it backwards. The red socket one that i was trying to identify has to be the seat belt one which i imagine is not wired to the belts. the car didnt come with belts so i bought after market ones but didnt see any wire that would connect to seat belts. The light comes on for a few seconds when i turn the power on then goes off and never comes back on.

My new question is how do i wire the seat belts so indicator light actually works?
Short answer - You don't. That function has to be built into the buckle.
The early cars had an optional " belt minder system "
It would cause the round seat belt light, on the drivers side to flash when the car was started.
It would flash untill it timed out, nothing connected to the belts.

In 72 they started using sensors in the seats and the warning light was standard.
It was a rectangular light on the passenger side dash

The green wire by the parking brake is not always used.
If it was functional, you would have a switch on the parking brake.

Now that I know my seat belt light on my dash is actually my parking brake on light and the actual seat belt light is loose behind the dash, where is the appropriate place to mount it and keep it concours correct? driver Right side of my lower dash has following config:

- starter on left and wiper knob on right.
- in between starter and wiper but upper part is another knob (dont know what that is).
- in between starter and wiper but lower part is seat belt warning light (but actually parking brake on).
