Can anyone recomment how to connect voltmeter gauge on 1969 mach 1? I want to buy the console gauge pod and wire a voltmeter. Is there a specific wire I tap into?
You could hook directly to the battery . Which would be the most accurate, since there is some voltage drop through the harness. As long as all connections are good, the voltage drop would be miniscule. That being said any 12 Volt wire that goes hot "with the key on" will give you a voltage reading for your guage. JTS 71 Mach1
Thanks, I figured any wire with voltage would give me a reference. Can you recommend how to hook up the ammeter?

For an Amp meter you must take A 12 volt hot wire, once again one that goes hot with the ignition key Cut the wire and put the guage in line. In other words take one end of cut wire, to one side of guage, and the other side of the guage, to the other cut end, taking note of the direction of current flow. That's the simple answer. I would look up the wiring diagram for a 71/73, and find the wire for the Amp guage in the harness. Should be behind the center of the dash. As that is the direct link from the Alternator and will give the truest reading. And remember good clean tight connections, as amperage has a nasty tendency to get things very hot in a hurry if things are not tight. Hope this helps. JTS 71 Mach1
+1 on Volt meter connection - Only hot with ign on.
Amp Meter - A totally different and ugly animal. Depending where it is connected you may read only current draw into the ign circuit or alternator output.
To read the battery charge current the meter needs to be in the main supply wire to the whole of the car from the battery. This does not mean the heavy wire from the battery to the starter. The current in that cable will fry your meter and new wiring.
As JTS71M1 stated, using the original loom wires where possible is the best option. Make sure any new wires are at least the same spec as the existing.
IMO - Stick to the Volt Meter!
