A couple of years ago I posted a problem with my 72 Mach 1. Back then the grille lights & the gauge lights were dead.
Since then I got the grille lights fixed (new headlight switch). The gauge lights are still dead. In the owners manual it shows the gauge lights being on fuse # 3 (a short 4 amp fuse) along with the wipers, lighter, heater switch & radio which all work.
Back in high school I had a 72 sports roof sprint, it had the same issue. If I'm not mistaken, starting in 71 Ford went to the circuit board style connections for the gauges. The gauges all work it's just their lights that are dead. Any ideas of things to check would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Keith

P.S.
I've already tryed different positions on the heagdlight switch reostat.
Electrical is not my forte so defer to anyone else's recommendations first.

Personally I would check for power at the circuit board plug to see if you are getting power for the dash lights there. From there you will know which direction to look.
Steven pointed you in the right direction. If you have power to the instrument panel plug, start following the lines of the printed circutry across the back of the cluster. It's not impossible to have a break in the copper lines which basically replace individual wires. These are repairable if not to badly damaged. Not all ripped to heck in other words. I don't know what it's called, but there is a liquid repair fluid, that will repair just this problem. I saw it used on Truck Tech on TV. And it actually worked. Somebody has got to know what its called??? Anyone??? Wish I could tell you more, but that sounds like what you'll find is your problem. I hope someone knows what that stuff is called. JTS 71 Mach1
My circuit board had problems with the copper tracks breaking off where the plug plugs in. I had to repair mine using copper tracks I peeled off vero board (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veroboard). I soldered this to the old tracks and used super glue to stick it to the plastic that the circuits are mounted on.
