I had a chance to pick up a 65 Mustang, I'm the second owner. According to all I know about this car it has 69k original miles. It runs pretty good, could use a few things, and I have addressed many issues already, but I think I want more power, this little 289 stock needs more. Has lots of little leaks from sitting for 5 years. So instead of chasing my tail I thought Id just build a new motor.
Any suggestions on motor builders you know and what experiences you have had with that company. I thought about buying a Ford crate motor but its going to cost 7000.00!! So for that money I think I could build something stronger better faster for less.
Sold the gold glo 72 coupe, its going to England tomorrow.

Sorry, I don't have any recommendations for motor choice. How did your experience go with the Fox body engine?
The motor was solid, it just had no power and it cost me 7400 to do everything to have no power. I went to a place that claimed they were honest, and to make it worse hes the vice president of our car club, he screwed me royally, so I wont use him, luckily that car sold and I broke even on the motor, but lost on the overall car purchase. It went to NY.
I'm contemplating buying a crate motor but they are so expensive.
I really think its a shame that 75% of most car repair type places, don't even know what the word honest means, and its the first word they use to describe their business, and the other 25% aren't in Arizona. I just don't know about buying a motor long distance, with the possibility of needing warranty coverage.
Very clean and good looking 65! You don't see them like that up here in New England. I went the crate the motor route one time and it was pretty expensive, I agree. The second time around I was lucky enough to locate a short block at a local swap meet that was completely rebuilt for a $1,000. But by the time a put heads, intake, manifold, cam, lifters, carb, and headers on it I was into it for another $1800 or so. Not cheap but a lot cheaper than the crate motor I purchased the first time.
I would price out 2-3 local machine shops to see who comes in closest to your budget. If you are concerned with honesty you can always check your local Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints have been placed against the business.
Sorry to hear that that experience did not work out. What a shame it should have been such a great connection.
Surely in a place like Phoenix there is someone that is honest in practice and knowledgeable in building a common 302!

Great looking 65. It reminds me of the one a neighbor owned back in the late 60's, white with black vinyl top. I ask him about selling it several times back then, but he did not want to sell.

Mike/Rare Pony no it does not have the pony interior. It has the crappy 65 lawn chairs in it, I've currently changed the seats to ones out of a 68 which also has head rests, still waiting to get the seat upholstered. Not a big rush until I figure out the motor, no sense in having clean interior before it runs right, and strong.

In both cases selling happened because of ebay. I take lots of photos, videos etc... I also do not let people bid on my auctions unless they have a Paypal account. This limits me on potential buyers but it also weeds out a lot of idiots that bid and have no intentions of paying.
This 65 will also probably be a flip but I'm not in a hurry. My ultimate goal is a 69-70 Fastback or Mach 1. I'm having to do it slowly to raise my cash, so far with my flips I've accumulated about 15k minus the 7k to buy this 65. Figuring Ill sell this down the line for 13-18k which might get my spendable CASH up to 23k, getting closer to that dream car!!
Its not going to be cheap to get a fastback since most are restored or rusted, Im hoping to find an older high quality restored one down the line for 25-30k, but this price will give me a really solid rust free car, I only want rust free non repaired floors.
If you decide to flip the 65 drop me an e-mail (no rush on this side either). I know the fastbacks are cool but I really like the coupes (maybe I have some English heritage in my blood) I been bouncing around doing a trans-am style coupe as my next project.
