Hi all,

One of the final things I'm doing prior to getting the 410 stroker upgrade to my 69 on the road is to replace all of the power steering hoses, since they're old, hard, cracked and leaky.

I ordered a set of hoses from Laurel Mountain Mustang back in Feb. When I went to put them on, I appear to be missing the 2nd half of the pump-side pressure hose.

The old hose setup has the pressure line coming out of the pump, then connecting to a steel tube that runs through the two-hole rubber grommet that is in the bracket connected to the frame cross-member. On the other side of this steel tube, it reconnects to a 2nd pressure hose that goes to the valve body that supplies fluid to the slave cylinder.

My question is this: Does that steel tube belong there? Or was that jerry-rigged by the previous owner over 20 years ago? Does anyone know if there is a 2nd half to the pressure hose that would screw into the first half fitting? I've got the same question in to Laurel Mountain Mustang, but they're not open on weekends.

Regards,
Hutch
I would contact Don at ohio mustang.
Sorry Hutch, I don't have an answer for you.

I thought that maybe my Mustang Restoration Guide might show me what you wanted to know but there is not enough detail shown.

Rare Pony has some good detail books that might show what you need to know and Bob Harlan has a 69 of his own and might be able to help. Don at Ohio Mustang is always a good source of information.
Thanks guys. I received an email reply today from Laurel Mountain Mustang saying that "Yes, the two hoses attach". Once I get back to the garage I'll take some photos to send them.

In this picture (found via the ebay parts posting from someone), I see where they attach. The two hoses I have are both male ends at that point, so perhaps I have a wrong hose.

As a follow-up, the pressure hose IS in two parts that connect. However, the bend in the one I got isn't sharp enough where it goes into the valve body. If I turn the wheel left, the metal tubing will be crushed against the pitman arm.

Here's a comparison of the old and new hoses (pic below).

Anyone else run into this? I suppose I'll put the old one back on and look for another rear-pressure hose - maybe from Inline Tube. There's no way to bend that last bend anymore without kinking the tubing. I suppose it will bend better if I heat it ... will that weaken the tubing?

Hutch

That's not good - those two parts look nothing alike.
not real sure i would try heating it as this will discolor it. Might try rockauto.com they have several manufactures listed and also 1 with a cooler option I use them for my daily drivers have not ordered anything from them for the Mach.
I am not an expert on power steering systems but here is a link to Chock-O-Stang who specialize in these early Mustang braking and steering parts. If you scroll down on the page of the link below you will see what hoses they offer for your year car. Apparently, there are different size hoses so you will need call them with some specifics and they should be able to get you what you need.

I purchased a brake distribution block and quick ratio steering box from them in the past and was completely satisfied with both.

Thank Mike, I'll check them out.

After a few bends we got the hose to fit while clearing the pitman arm. The new rear pressure hose doesn't fit as nicely as the original, it sort of hangs down lower and doesn't go through the double-grommet as nicely, but I'm back on the road (so to speak - it's still raining).

Here's a few pictures of how it looks installed :
