I just picked up my 2004 Oxford White 5 sp Mach 1. Bought the car in South Florida, and brought it home to Canada(newbie) today. I bought it off the second owner, who bought it from the original owner.
Now I noticed it has black valve covers?? I read that Ford made 2 changes in 2004 from 2003 Mach 1's. And one of these changes was the Silver valve covers instead of the black?? I questioned the owner and he swears that the car is all original and stock. The build date is 01/04? Early build. Could it be possible that this car has an 2003 motor in it, or they put black valve covers instead of silver.
Now I did notice that the hood hinge nuts have had a wrench on them, and one bolt is not a factory bolt. Everything under the hood appears to be the 32 valve all aluminum power house.
WHEN I CHECK THE FORD CATALOG IT SHOWS AN OLDER PART NUMBER FOR VALVE COVERS BEING REPLACED BY A NEW NUMBER WHICH SAYS MAY HAVE TO PAINT TO MATCH PAST MODEL APPLICATIONS. WITH YOUR V.I.N. IN IT PULLS THE NEWER NUMBER THAT SAYS TO PAINT. THAT BAD THING IS THAT IS DOES NOT SAY WHICH COLOR. I RAN THE WARRANTY HISTORY ON THE CAR TO SEE IF MAYBE THEY WERE CHANGED BUT THE ONLY THING THAT CAME UP WAS A STEERING GEAR REPLACEMENT IN 2007. MY GUESS IS YOU HAVE A LEFT OVER ENGINE THAT WAS ON THE ASSEMBLY LINE IN YOUR CAR SINCE IT WAS AN EARLIER BUILD.
Thanks Jade. Is that a good thing or bad thing?? Is the 03 motor the same as a 04 motor?? And is there any VIN stamping on the motor that I can look for??
Ya found out that the motor is a 03 Mach 1. I talked to the original owner and he said he broke the original motor. That was the only motor he could find. That answers the black valve covers.
