Hello. I am new to the forum. I am looking at putting an aftermarket stereo under the dash of my sons 1971 Mach 1. I don't want to take out the factory stereo. Has any one done this? If so, where did you mount it? Or does any one think in the glove is a better place? I found that best buy has a universal under dash mount for under $20. Has any one ever used this on their's? The factory stereo works but my son is a teenager and doesn't want to listen to static am radio. I already replaced the factory speaker (which was under the dash) and put new ones under the side panels of the rear seats. There was no holes for speakers in door panel or side panel. Is that normal? Also no cut outs on rear deck lid area either. I don't want to cut of make holes that don't belong, so I am modding a bit, at the same time I just trying to give my son some tunes that he will enjoy. We are a Mustang family but this is our first classic. We also have a 93 Cobra and a 91 SSP. My son grew up going to Mustang shows and fell in love with the Mach 1's. We have had this car for over a year and enjoy working on it together. My son is only 14 and not able to drive yet. He's learning the hard work involved in fixing up a far - and so are we. LOL We have a car show this weekend in Ocala, Fl we are going to take the cars to and I wanted to have this done before that time.
Thanks in advance for your reply, Erica
Welcome Erica,

Sound technology has come a long way since what was available in a factory 71 Mach 1.

I have not added any radio updates to my car but others who have will no doubt jump in and give you some ideas. I do have to agree with making minimal changes to the car.

Here's to bringing up your son with a love for Mustangs and a Mach 1.
Stereo radio speakers were mounted in the doors if your '71 came from the factory with either stereo AM/tape or AM/FM stereo. A single, center- dash mounted speaker was utilized if your vehicle was equipped with AM or AM/FM non-stereo radio.
Your '71 will not have holes (provisions) in the doors to mount speakers if the car did not come equipped with a factory stereo option. (Different door shells - believe-it-or-not ) If you have to, you can cut holes in the inner door stampings but you'll have to cut out your door panels and purchase factory-type black plastic speaker grilles (available reproduction) to make the installation look factory-installed. Word of caution here- measure carefully before cutting doors and door panels.SSig_goodluck

His 71 only seems to have the center dash mounted speaker. Which I removed and saved. I won't be putting holes in the door panels. It is now obvious that his didn't come with that option. The two I have hidden under the side arm panels in the rear don't sound bad. Maybe I will put a removable trunk box speaker, depending on the sound quality back there.
Plan on going to best buy when they open today and doing something with that universal under dash mount they carry. I will post a pic once the job is done. I haven't found any photos online of someone using it in a 71. I did find a 69 with an under dash mode that was custom made. It looked nice and didn't take away from the factory deck. I am hoping to accomplish something similar.
Thanks for the quick replies. -E

Wow under the dash? Its been along time for me on that one.

I remember mounting my 8-track and revirb under the dash on my 55. looked great until someone ripped it of.
why not look at the hidden radio setup , I think the equip mounts in the trunk and has a small transmitter that control from the glove box .On some mustangs they have speakers that mount in the kick panels up front ,
Just a thought.
