I had an issue and Vmach answered in an odd place so I wanted to make sure this topic continued. How to tell if a Fastback is a Mach 1.

The photo below is the beginning of the conversation that I turned into an image to move it properly.

Please correct the years by the engines I listed above. I listed 71 three times when of course it should be 71 72 73. I also forgot to mention a 351W never came in a 71-73 Mustang.
Yes - if the forth digit in the VIN is a 5 then it's a Mach1.
Well I wont be able to correct the misprints on the year as it is a photo, but you have clarified that now with the post :)

I figured this could be useful since people rarely remove there fenders unless an accident or restoration.

Here's the vin number on the Passenger Side under the front fender. I removed the last 2 digits for my own security, but there are six digits after the 2Fxxxxxx

I guess it's useful in the sense that it has the last six digits of the VIN number. However. for some weird reason the body code and engine code are left out. Here's an example of a VIV for a 72 Mach1.

2F05H100001
2 - 1972
F - Ford Dearborn
05 - Mach1
H - 351 @ bbl
100001 - serial number

So - I'd say that fender is missing the body and engine code. Perhaps this makes some sense as they may have assigned the number but not decided what the body style would be. Kevin Marti could probably explain this.

In 1969 the Mach1 still had the bodycode '02' [sportsroof]
That changed with the introduction of the 1970 model when the Mach1 got a different bodycode to '05'
Mach1's have 63R for a body code for 71-73. 63C for 69 & 70. This is the only for sure way that I know of. You can't for sure tell by engines. Coupes and fastbacks came with some of the same drivetrain packages as some mach 1's. Some of the grilles were diffrent in the 70's for fastback and mach1. But that could have been swaped out. Also some of the glove boxes had a emblem that would say mach1.
VAMACH 1 knows his stuff, especially when it comes to that "common misconception" list. I think there are more mach-1's with side stripes, dual exhaust, front and/or rear spoilers, and magnum 500 wheels now - than FOMOCO ever produced. I see so many cars with the side stripe AND the bright trim. According to Marti, only a small percentage of '71-'72 machs came from the factory with the side stripe option, but you see it on almost every car out there. The 3-speed manual was standard on mach-1's with the 302-2v, and 351-2v only. You hardly see any because it wasn't popular and dealers almost always stock-ordered automatics because they sold well. A friend of mine in high school had a '71 mach, 351-2v with the three speed manual. His dad bought the car new.
Can you see the vin under the fender with a mirror and torch?
No you will definitely need to remove the fender to see the vin. Plus in my photos I had removed all the black paint to see it so clearly.
Here is a photo of the VIN on my 73 fender well. Mine is a 73 Convertible, but the body code and engine code is also left out. The rest of the code matches the VIN on the windshield tag.
