Looking to replace tires on my ride. At the end of the day, I'm looking for a nice appearance with some appeal for the correct timeframe. I can't decide between BF Goodrich Radial TAs or Goodyear Eagle GT IIs? Thoughts and input welcome. Thanks!
Of course neither of those are original so it is up to your taste.
Most of the ones that are seen with latter market tires are of the BFG brand.
Enjoy the ride.
Thanks Steve- I don't want original because its a driver, so I want the modern technology for performance. I love the white lettering on both the BFG and GY models! Do you know what came stock on the 72 Mach 1? Was it raised white letter or all black?
Original tires were the Firestone Wide Oval bias ply. My preference would lean toward the BFGs. I have them on my 67 GT and have enjoyed them. I personally am not a big fan of the Goodyears, but that is my personal preference. You tend to see more of the BFGs on muscle car era vehicles at shows.
72 Machs with standard 14" wheels typically came with Firestone Wide Ovals. 15" Magnums came with F60-15 Goodyear Polyglas GTs.
My car currently runs BFG T/A Radials 255/60/15 rear, 245/60/15 front.
These are considerably larger than the stock tires, but fill up those cavernous wheel wells nicely. Gives the car a nice period-correct look to casual observers, but subtly improves the stance and appearance of the car in a dramatic way.
I think what it will boil down to in the end is - What's available in 14 or 15 inch - These sizes are becoming increasingly difficult to find and are fast becoming "specialty sizes" (especially the 14's). BFG's are a good choice, as are Cooper "cobra series". Specialty tire companies like Coker sell reproduced original bias ply designs in lots of sizes, raised white letter, redlines, whitewalls, whatever..... but they're pricey.
Anyone know where to get BF Goodrich Radial T/A's in 17"? I'm currently running 255/60/17 in rear and 245/60/17 in the front.
If you are looking to keep an original appearance, you can't use 17"" wheels. 15" is of course the largest available back then.
Stick to 15", but go a little wider (8-9"), use a meatier tire and you will maintain a fairly original look but with a more aggresive appearance.
Great idea- thanks! I acquired the car with the 17s so I'll get it back to a wider 15 in a staggered stance. Thanks
