Hey guys,

So I recently came into a 72 Q code mach 1. Very clean car, paint is rough but runs and not a dent on the car. I am new to this model of mustang so Im looking for any info you guys can give.

Here is what I know:

build date is 3/72
paint matches the code in the door.
not a salvaged title
the engine looks all stock (all ford blue with powered by ford valve covers?)
except the carb and air filter are edelbrock
All of the car stickers including the jack instructions are where they should be on the car.

whats throwing me off is all of the paint and mach 1 stripes look factory painted BUT rather than a solid black hood like every mach 1 had, this has two stripes. Everything I have seen tells me that this isnt stock but they are definitely not decals and all of the factory stickers are still on it.

Were there any 72 mach 1 Q codes that has black race stripes?

Does anyone know how many Q codes were produced that year?

Is there a way to find a build number on the car?

Is there anything else I should know about this car?

Thanks!!

Hi Mike, sounds to me like the hood at some time had been repainted. As far as 1971-73 mustangs go, not every mach-1 had a black (or argent) hood. In fact, most were painted the same color as the rest of the car. Other than the factory 2-tone scheme available with ram-air (either matte black or argent), I'm not aware of any other factory paint variations except the white with blue design on the 1972 "sprint" cars. Also, the stripes on these cars were decals, not painted on as you described. Most cars came from the factory with only a stripe on he rear of the car. It was placed on the rear quarter panel extensions and deck lid. The side stripes were optional equipment (aka body stripe option). Most cars were equipped with the standard mach-1 anodized bright body side trim on the fenders, doors, and rear quarter panels. Your car was built with one or the other, not both. Q-code production for 1972 breaks down as follows: Coupes (aka hardtops) : 344 with 4-speed, 697 with C-6 automatic. Fastbacks (all, including mach-1) : 2,596 with 4-speed, 6,081 with C-6 automatic. Convertibles : 201 with 4-speed, 330 with C-6 automatic. Total of 10,249 "Q code" vehicles. I would suggest you order a Marti Report for your vehicle. It will give you information specific to YOUR vehicle as identified by it's V.I.N. All as-built from Ford information will be included.
Welcome Mike,

It looks like GXR has given you some very good information on the possibles of your specific car.

If my mind is envisioning correctly what you have described then no, the paint is not factory.

Throw up a few pictures and we can be sure of what you are talking about.

+1 on the Marti report. That is where the truth will be told.
