Early this year I had the 351cj in my 72 Mach 1, completely rebuilt. I spoke to two of the previous owners, both swore that the engine was original. So in the interest of maintaining a numbers matching car, i went so far as to have one cylinder sleeved. Weather it was a good call remains to be seen. I didn't find out until after the rebuild that the block should have a partial vin. stamped into it. I was told it was right below the head (I forget which side). I couldn't find any stamped numbers at all. Now I'm trying to check again for the number, I've looked, shot pics. of areas I couldn't see and even used modeling clay to try to retrieve a stamped number. Did all 72 Mach 1s have a partial vin stamp? If so exactly where is it? Did replacement blocks have any kind of special stampings? Did all Fords from 70-73 have the partial vin. stamp, or just the Mustangs or just the 351cj's. Sometimes I astound myself with the lack of vital knowledge I possess about these cars.
Any input(positive or constructive criticism) would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Keith

Crazy
I have a VIN stamped on the drivers side under the head at the front of the engine. A bit hard to see but can be seen and it matches the car.

Thanks, I kept looking at the rear of the block. I'll check it as soon as possible,(right now I'm in the process of repainting the hood black out). At least now I Know where to look.
Thanks again,
Keith
Stamped on the block LH drivers side at the back
EDIT - this info is for a 351C
It is hard to see - but you can do it with a mirror
You almost have to lay on the shock tower brace to get back there.

All 71-3 Mustangs had the last 6 of the vin stamped on engine and trans

Service blocks usually did not have stamped numbers

I found your old post
I have a 72 Mach1, 351cj. Currently the engine is out and just back from the machine shop. I was expecting the block # to be "D2AE-CA, or possibly "DOAZ-D", or "DOAE-J- G". The number is in fact "DOAE-L OH4". Is this a replacement block or a standard number that I was unaware of.

Your block was cast in Aug of 1970 - it will not match a 72 car

Steve O - no clue - never saw one at the front
Could it have been done when imported ?
All the Cleveland's are at the back - What motor is in your car ?
Boss 302's were stamped on the top center of the block in the back by the intake

Aussie Clevelands had the number stamped at the front of the engine on the side of the block above the fuel pump mounting apparently from some reading.

Mine is at the front of the engine in front of where the fuel pump is located on an oval/oblong flat area. I have taken a pic and circled it in yellow.

Steve O, you number stampings are also to nice -
All the US / Cleveland stamps at the back of the block are not in line or spaced evenly or even stamped the same depth
They were done with individual number stamps

Thanks Don. Looks like my post won't help Keith and will be a mystery for me for a while Sad
