I just spent about two hours sanding portions of my car where surface rust had been for probably years. I still have a couple hours of sanding to go then I while simply primer the areas till further funds become available for a paint job.
Remember to use an epoxy primer so that no moisture wicks under the primer causing the same problem anew.
When I was working on my 73 sometimes only an hour or two was all I had on some days, but it all adds up and you will get there!
Absolutely use a epoxy primer or good quality brand. No cheap stuff here it doesn't last or work ( true water will wick under or even have sun bake the cheap stuff right off) For what its worth I just got my 72 mach 1 paint & body work project finished and am putting it back together now. I have just in sanding mind you, not counting body work or any thing other than the sanding times, I have almost 850 hours just in sanding. That includes the initial sanding of the original paint, then sanding the body work areas, then blocking the primer with guide coat, fixing what I missed or wasn't happy with then blocking again, then 1 final coat of primer and sanding 1st with 340 wet & dry then 400 then 600 and finally I painted it. Wow I know every nook cranny and curve on her. But I wouldn't trade doing it myself and the satisfaction of that for anything. You are just at the beginning stage. Good luck on your journey. mine took all in from start to paint almost 2 years. Granted I had to replace some sheet metal and fabricate my own cowl replacement from one out of a 72 montego since no one builds a replacement one. Anyway enjoy the ride.

Yes I saw that a little while ago. Glad they are finally being done. I have seen an increase in some parts being built for the 71-73 mustangs, FINALLY, maybe that's a sign they are on the rise in popularity. That is a double edge sword though good and bad. It means parts cars and used parts will be on the increase in price, but that our cars will also be starting to rise in value. I will get some pics on I promise. I work a weird schedule 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off. Most of my off time the last 18 months has been spent doing the body & paint work on my mustang. Thankfully I have a very understanding wife and she has kept her honey do list to a bare minimum to enable me the time for my project. Now that I got the paint done, most of my time of has been working putting all the pieces back together since I painted the parts individually ( fenders doors ect) I totally stripped the car and am now trying to remember where all those small pieces go. Anyway I have tons of pictures I have taken all along the way and will continue until the finished product is done. So I will get them organized and do some posting of them in the near future.
