A while ago I posted that my Carter Competition series carb, ran great until I got around 5000 r.p.m.. It seemed like the car was starved for fuel. I already have an HEI so I think it's a fuel issue. is The Carter is about 600 c.f.m. & is just a bit small I think. A friend gave me a Speed Demon 650 it's in good shape and I will rebuild it before trying it. It is already set-up with a Ford linkage. It really isn't much bigger (cfm wise) than the Carter (Though it weight alot more). Does anyone have experience with Speed Demons? Do you think it will help the problem I described? I've got a book on how to trick out Holleys, I think most of it would apply. One of the big differences between a demon and a Holley is that Demons have a secondary block that is adjustable just like the primary block. The Holley 600 I'm running on my 69 Cougar had a non-adjustable secondary block. By the way the demon has vacuum secondaries and an electric choke.
Any input would be appreciated,
Thanks, Keith
P.S. My car has a q-code 351cj freshly rebuilt with higher compression, a bit hotter cam, & Edelbrock performer intake. It is a 4 spd. with a 3.75 trac loc.
Crazy
I was having the same problem with my Q code 73' - I didn't try jetting the Carter AFB (it was on the car when I bought it). I bought a Street avenger 670cfm, it too was lean on the top end, I bumped the jets up to 70 in primary and 72 in the secondaries, Huge improvement!

Thanks for the info. it's good to know. I do have a kit for the Carter with a variety of metering rods & springs. I may play with these a little since I already have them (they came with the car, as did the Carter which was just rebuilt).
Thanks again,
Keith
P.S. is your Q-code modified or stock?

While I am not even close to a carburetor expert I have to agree with your thoughts that maybe you need more than what you have. I also agree that since you have the bigger jets that it would be a great idea to give then a go and see how much of a change it all makes for you.

Let us know how it all works out.

There are a few guys here that can set us straight on the carburetor science.
