The majority of 72 Mach 1s I see (including my own) have the front chin spoiler. Today I was reading an article in an old (1985) issue of mustang monthly. The featured car was a beautiful gold glow Mach1, which the owner had ordered brand new in 72. The article went on to say that the owner ordered it loaded just the way he wanted it. One item not on the order sheet was a front chin spoiler. He said that the chin spoiler had to be ordered "over the counter" & then installed by the dealer. I find it hard to believe that was the only way to get the chin spoiler, they are very commonly seen on 72 Mach 1s. Like I said, my Mach1 has the chin spoiler but it is not listed on the Marti sheet. So mine, at least, seems to confirm the statement above. Does anyone know the real deal?
Thanks for your input,

I have nothing concrete to base my opinion on, except personal observation. I was 13 when the 71 Mach1, was produced. and I was car nuts, I could tell you virtually every car on the road year make model etc. As far as the 71 to 73 Mustang's go I almost never saw one with the front spoiler. I knew several of them and some of there owners around town, and no one had a front spoiler. It seems that until the 2000's when the 71-73's became popular, as far as being sought after and restored. That I never saw very many with a spoiler. But once they became popular it seems every damn one of them has the spoiler. And if yours doesn't have it, it's considered a bad thing! Just my thoughts and observations. JTS 71 Mach1
I don't have anything to help with the question but will add a comment to keep the thread going. As previously said it seems that every one you see has them, I thought that must have been the way they came. Mine doesn't have the chin spoiler or the boot spoiler either. When I first bought it I thought about adding them but I like the way it looks, I reckon they look sleeker without them, so I won't be adding them. I like to be different Biggrin
I have done some research and it sounds like the chin spoiler and rear spoiler were "dealer only" options. The only car the spoiler came standard equipment on was the Boss, and it was dealer installed.

My disclaimer: Please do not hold me personally accountable for this information as it was derived from unofficial sources and I am by no means an expert in this area (lol). However, I hope it was helpful.

Rear spoiler was a factory option for any 71-3 sportsroof

Front spoiler only came from the factory on BOSS 351's

I think you're absolutely right Ohio Mustang. My Marti report does show the rear spoiler but not the chin spoiler. It's kinda like Magnum 500's they look so good, you'ld think every Mach 1 came with them. But we know better.

My 73 MACH 1 has neither front nor rear from the factory.

To be different from the factory - you added them.

To be different from the norm of today - you leave them off.

I'll chime in too, from what I have read on other forums the front spoiler was a dealer option and as Don said, except for the Boss 351.
