this what i did saturday.
That looks like a fun Saturday!
Everything was going peachy till we found this.
Tonight i took my tranny apart and am getting a couple new seals to put in it before it goes back in.I found those shop towels just as you see them and they got caught in a lifter and took out a came lobe .There is also damage to atleast one piston and the crank. The parts are at the machine shop for examination.

The good news the tranny looks great and will only
cost me the price of the seals..BONUS.
UNBELIEVABLE!
Wow, I've heard of finding shop towels in an engine before. Quite a mistake.
yeah, it;s not any fun but what do ya do...I just gotta fix it .That is all i can do or if it's too bad maybe another motor.I suspect a call tomorrow or Thursday.....Wish me luck.

One of those cylinders looked like it could use a bore job on it. Some signs of pitting.

WOW.
Good luck in your trouble shooting.Crazy
Got word back yesterday.Since the cylinders have already been bored to .030 and most showing were at .007-.009 then it was suggested that i bore them all to .040 and that will clean 7 of them up and the 8th one that shows all the pitting MIGHTl need to be sleeved and bored to .040.I trust these guys and my dad use to use them a lot and was friends with the owner/founder.They are going to give me a quote on all the machine work/parts/labor to put it back together. There is something funky going on with the rocker studs also as one cylinder has washers between the stud and the guide plate to raise the stud...wierd...They can sort that out too for me and i don't know enough about it to sort that out.I am going to take the opportunity to switch from a solid cam and solid lifters to hydrolic cam and lifters for the ease of maintenance. The machine shop owner said he will try and compete with the internet places selling parts so i cannot ask for anything better than that .We pay a fair bit more for almost everything in Canada so that is why i have a usa ship to address.I weighed it all out and i think this one is best left to the pro's to sort out and not for me to buy parts elsewhere and ask them to install them whic h would void an warranty i would say.Oh yeah i took the oil pump apart and it looks scored so i will replace that as well.
Yeah it's not surprising to find the oil pump scored, after seeing how much metal is missing off the cam lobe. It could be possible that the washers were trying to correct the problem with the lobe? More or less a bandaid. Or ignorant engineering????? Were the washers on the cylinder that failed the cam lobe? Just a thought. JTS 71 Mach1
yes the washers were on the same side as the cam lobe failure. The guys at the shop thought it might have meen washered to avoid purchasing new pushrods but if so then why only one side.
I think the guys at the shop will get to the bottom of it.

You guys see any issues with replacing the cam with a hydrolic one and hyd lifters
