My 72 Mach 1 currently has an in dash cassette player, which sounds OK but barely. I have a factory AM radio that I'm considering reinstalling. My car is not gonna be a #1 resto. I drive it and intend to keep driving it alot. I've got a 45 watt x 4 channel Sony cassette deck that would require modifying the dash to install. I'm not gonna cut the dash. So I'm considering mounting the Sony unit in the glove box. Why a cassette player? you may ask. I've got a CD changer that connects remotely to the Sony unit. I'll mount the CD changer in the trunk. My biggest problem is where to put the speakers. Two will go in the doors (replacing the factory units). But I've got an amp with sub-woofer and 6 x 9 tri-axials. I've got the fold down rear seat so no package tray. The sub-woofer I'm gonna set up in a removable case, the amp will also attach to this case, since it will be used only to power the sub woofer. But what about the 6 x 9s? One option I'm strongly considering is, switching the 6 x 9 s into my 69 cougar and using the self-enclosed pioneer speakers from the cougar in the Mach 1. This would eliminate the need to cut holes anywhere (except in the Cougar). I'm not sure which would sound better. I used to know my stuff regarding stereos but that was in 1980 and my knowledge hasn't kept up. Any input, ideas, or criticisms are welcomed.
Thanks,

since you have a fold down
Instead of cutting holes in either car
Pick up a used 71-3 trap door 35.00 - 50.00
cut and mount the speakers in it, you could even cover the face of it and the speakers with the newer felt / headliner material. Pretty sure sound travels thru it fine and will hide the spreakers

I like that idea, I like it alot. I'm gonna check it out, it would allow me to install the speakers without permenantly altering the car!
Thanks alot,
Keith
I saw a speaker bar device that fit in the storage area but that was for a 67 . you might try and find one of those.
I have a 73 with the fold down seats and the trap door. When I purchased the car it had the holes cut in each side for the speakers, I would not recommend doing that as it is a expensive option to fix if you ever want to take them out not just the panel but also the steel panel each side of the trap door.I looked at a lot of options cutting holes in the trap door was not one but that is a good idea. I would probably get a replacement one before I cut the one in the car though, I ended up buying box speakers of ebay ans mounted them on each side only drilling 2 holes for each speaker in the steel frame that fits under the rear window. I could not find any car speakers in box mounts but if you look for boat speaker you will have better luck. I can send pictures if you want to see them.

If you go the second trap door route, let me know
I may have a used one

No I disagree
I have a 73 with a 70 motor - ex drag car
It has headers and OLD early turbo mufflers
The mufflers are rotted out- cannot beat that sound - nor can you hear any else
By the way in regards to my original post, I don't have a problem with modifying the Cougar's package tray and though I love it and really love driving it, it's not a valuable classic. It is however, my daily driver so form will definitely follow function on the Cougar. My Mach 1, although somewhat modified, could easily be returned to "stock" if I wanted to or if a future owner wanted to. Please also note that I do not for see ever selling either car. I've promised the Cougar to my daughter...someday!.

Thanks for everyones input, I really value it,
Keith
