My Mach 1 is a 72 with a freshly rebuilt 351cj, and a factory 4 spd. Toploader, wide ratio. The rear end has a 3.73 traction loc. I'm still breaking it in and haven't pushed it too hard, yet. My question is in regards to the 4spd. I can easily take off from a dead stop in 2nd gear. 1st gear seems very low. Do all toploader, wide ratio transmissions have the same interior gearing? One other question is in regard to the oil pressure. According to the factory gauge, oil pressure holds pretty close to 60 psi all the time. A couple of days ago I moved the car to a better spot in the garage. After I moved it I saw a puddle of oil forming under the car. It turns out that the Motorcraft oil filter failed. The can portion blew off completely, while the threaded ring stayed on the car. My mechanic said he had only seen this once before, with a cheapo K-mart filter. He has ordered a heavy duty oil filter that should be in today.
Has anyone heard of this happening before?
I appreciate any & all input,

I blew an oil filter apart on my 351C 4V years ago but what had happened was that I had attempted to clean some small pieces of old valve stem seals out of the pump and push the pressure spring in. A mechanic friend had told me that the pressure would push it back out once the motor fired up - it didn't.

As to the top loader. I believe the two gear ratios for the first gear are 2.78 and 2.32 David Kee has an excellent site:

and will have this answer as well as whatever other you may have.
