My 1972 Mach 1 has chrome "power by ford" valve covers. They look very much like 69 boss 302 units. I thought I had read an article showing the difference between these covers & the Boss units. The main difference, aside from the obvious decals, was the the attached plug wire bracket. It was either a different type attachment or maybe a complete lack of the bracket. There are alot of knowledge people among the members of this web site. They usually are right when they say something relevant. Two such members have told me that chrome valve covers were not available in 72. Perhaps I'm wrong and a previous owner had them chromed or maybe they were available from the Ford parts bin, over the counter. In the attached pic they appear to have a satin look, that is because they were in poor condition, so I cleaned ,polished then sealed them with clear coat. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

thanks again,

I DO NOT SEE ANYTHING IN THE FORD PARTS BOOK FOR OPTIONAL CHROME COVERS. THE ONLY NUMBER THEY SHOW ARE THE ALUMINUM COVERS DON FROM OHIO TALKED ABOUT. HOWEVER IF YOU CAN GET YOUR HANDS ON SHOWROOM LITERATURE FROM THAT TIME PERIOD THERE MIGHT HAVE BEEN SOMETHING AVAILABLE THROUGH THAT. BELIEVE ME THAT ANYTHING IS AND WAS POSSIBLE AS I HAVE LEARNED DOING FORD PARTS FOR THE LAST 15 YEARS Biggrin

I hear ya Black jade, back in the day options were available that weren't openly listed. Such as an "engine dress-up package". Of course there is no such option. I'm becoming convinced that these were factory steel (blue) valve covers that someone had chrome plated. I like them so I think I'll use them anyway. Maybe down the road I'll have them re-chromed so they're nice and shine bright.
Thank you for your info.

It is completely possible that someone chromed them. I worked at Virco Mfg. They make school furniture and had there own chrome department, and actually allowed people to chrome small items for cars, trucks, etc. Whatever would fit on the racks. It was amazing what they would chrome. JTS 71 Mach1
I appreciate everyone who submitted input, regarding my 72 Mach 1. I have confirmed that all of you were correct.A definitive statement from Sean McDonagh from Kar Kraft settled the matter in my mind with the following statement "Hi there, your valve covers are not '69 Boss 302 covers. They look like stock 351 Cleveland covers, chromed." Sean'sExclamation qualifications include the following "Mustang Club of America Gold Card Judge B-60829" So thats that end of story. I do like them and intend to leave them on my car.

That's what matters most in this case. Enjoy.
