O.K., this is one of the stupider questions you'll ever se posted. Here goes, I can not remove the key from the column mounted ignition switch. Is there some kind of trick to getting it out?

I had this happen to a Pinto I had once. The tumbler assembly broke internally, and wouldn't allow the tumblers to retract, when you tried to remove the key. Thus jamming the key and making it impossible to remove. Quite unusual as that is the only time in all my years I ever saw or heard of it happening. Sounds like time to replace the lock cylinder assembly.

Also make sure the lock out rod is moving the column lock ring all the way back.
Usually this will not allow the key to be turned to the off / remove position
