I've just spent the last two weeks on removing my 351cj distributor. The old one was some kind of HEI drag racing set-up with a "Blue ribbon" control box and an interior timing adjuster (+ or - 15 degrees). I'm replacing it with a nice looking billet peice that I bought online. The problem is that the new unit has about a 1" longer shaft than the old unit. The gear seems to engage but the upper o-ring doesn't seal to the block. The new unit has 2 o-rings while the original only had 1. Do I need to use more force to seat the second o-ring or will the first ring (that does seal in the block) be adequate? The 2 units are the same length from first o-ring on the new unit and the single o-ring on the original piece. The new unit has a GM stle integrated coil.
I appreciate anyones input on this problem,
Thanx, Keith
Something doesn't sound right.

Can you post a comparison picture of the two?

Without knowing what either unit is it is impossible to say. Maybe with a few pictures or a few dimensions someone will be able to help.
Well i figured out the issue with my new HEI dist. The shaft is the same length as the stock one, it's the upper portion of the dist. that is extra large. I decided to go with a GM style HEI with the integrated coil. I've got chronic back pain and I just couldn't lean over the car to work on it, without causing extreme pain. So I had the car hauled to the local garage. Turns out I couldn't get the dist. all the way seated because it was hitting the Edlebrock high rise intake. The dist. was ground down to fit but now the Ram air, air cleaner won't fit. So for now I'm using an old chrome air cleaner, I had on hand. By the way the big red dist. cap at the front of the engine does not look appealing, I'll switch it out some time in the future.
thanx,
Keith

I have to say I agree with that summary. Shoot even GM tried to hide them in the back. Biggrin
