I have a 1970 Mach 1 that I am trying to restore. I know I have a 351 Cleveland 2V, an FMX Transmission and a Single trac rear end, and all three general requirements match the Door tag But Where specifically do I look for the codes on the engine, trans and rear end?
Hi, The transmission if it a FMX it will have 3 housing, the bell housing, the transmission housing then the tail shaft. If it is a C4or C6 it will not have a separate bell housing. The rear end will have metal tag on the bolts that mount it to the banjo. the #'s on the tag tell you what the rear end is.The ratio and if it is open or posi. Just google rear end tags for mustang and they will explain how to read them.I believe there are links on here as well i'm just not sure how to get them.As for the motor there are so many factors on weather it is the original I don't know the answer to that one. hope that helps?
The engine will have a partial vin hand stamped on the driver's side. It is usually not very clear but will prove the motor to be correct (or not) for the car.
Steven is correct
Engine has year , [ usually ] plant code, and last 6 digits of the vin
stamped on block, back side, right below LH head

Trans, will have same stamping, place depends on trans, look for a machine smooth flat area.

Rear end has tag [ or should have ] as rocketman stated

Not to be too critical but the c4 does have a removable bell housing.
