There is a good deal on a nice 1972 mustang FMX tranny I am considering for a conversion from a 4 speed to that tranny and wanted to know if that small block tranny is the same length as my car (1970 Mach 1)???
I would also appreciate any other ideas on this subject.
I have had a c-4 in an earlier mustang and I also had a c-6 in a 1970 Mach 1 years ago and liked it.
I just dont know how strong the FMX is supposed to be and what advantages it has if any over the others.

Thoughts????

Thanks...Ray sends

This much I do know . They are tough , tough Trannys. They were used in heavy trucks . that should tell you something. Heavy but strong.

What I am really after now is the markings, total length, etc on what to look for.

What years fit what etc....SCo_hmmthink

C-6 and or FMX.

I want it to fit the 1970 fastback/Mach 1 car.

I have a 1970 "429" Ford engine and C-6 combo that I got in a trade, but am unsure if it will fit without carving up the shock towers.
In 69 and 70 the Boss 429 cars had the shock towers cut and modified so it would fit.

OK "Ohio mustang"...be real.Notallthere
Those shock towers are over 5 thousand dollars and currently only made from a guy in Arizona....."custom made"!!
Who wants to spend that sort of cash only to use it for a 429 regular engine.....lol Now thats funny.
Most now a days are eliminating the shock towers with replacement of the stock suspension with mustang II or another
set up of sorts.

All I want to know is what C-6 or FMX small block trannies will fit my 70 Mach 1.
What is the length and markings on the trannies.... Since that big block 335 series engine wont fit easily.

REALLY
YOUR POST SAID

"I have a 1970 "429" Ford engine and C-6 combo that I got in a trade, but am unsure if it will fit without carving up the shock towers."

ALL I SAID WAS A 429 WON'T FIT WITHOUT CUTTING THE TOWERS

I have a 69 Mach 1, I am rebuilding it has 351w and HAD FMX. I put in C6 it fits perfect. Had to modify the passing gear kick down. The linkage worked. The C6 is longer in the tail, I have not done drive shaft yet but looks like I will have to cut off about 2 and half inches. The trans mount was about quarter inch different but the holes are slotted and worked fine. As for your shock towers if you go on you tube and put in mustang shock towers there is a video of a company that does notch out panels. They also have the how to video, and the brand, but no where near the money you are talking. However I do not know what you do with the upper control arm after ....so it may end up more then it is worth. Hope that helps.
rrs-online.com is for shock tower cut outs
I replaced a faulty C-6 with an FMX in a '71 mach some years ago. It swapped in fine. The donor vehicle was a '70 cougar (351-2V cleveland). I had to use the driveshaft as well because the original C-6 driveshaft was too short after the swap. Like ROCKETMAN said, the trans. kickdown had to be re-engineered, but, other than that, the only other issue was the back-up lights switch - to the best of my recollection. GXR

GXR: question ...How long is your C-6 drive shaft right now?

I am curious as to whether my 4 speed top loader driveshaft is close to that length?????

As for "Ohio Mustang": When you started mentioning the Boss 429 shock towers, I immediately started running up the dollar signs in my head. As stated earlier; They are being re-made to factory specs, there is an ongoing batch of work going on at dynacorn to also be a maker of these shock towers. Kasse engines now makes a boss 429 engine that is out of this world great , based on the 460 block. These new shock towers would be great for all those bottomless pit rich guys.
I personally would just prefer the drop in ease of just getting the engine installed and driving down the road without any heavy mods.
I apologize for the harshness.
Now on a positive note.
The suggestion for using a how to do method on modifying them is very useful at :"rrs-online.com "...
I am thinking that the following items of parts would be needed to do the C-6 conversion:
Shifter assembly
Trannsmission support brace
Carb kickdown bar/linkage
new peddle assembly
correct driveshaft with yolk
small block c-6 transmission with removeable tailshaft housing

The '71 I own now is a 4-speed car, so I can't help you with the measurement. Sorry. GXR
