Ok all, this is an odd issue that is making me scratch my head. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
1971 Mach 1 351 C 4V, that was starting and running just fine (albiet needed to get warmed up a bit). Last time I had it running it died out (not sure if it just wasn't warmed up enough as the water temp was only 150-160ish.). After this when I went to hit the ignition switch nothing would happen, could hear the solenoid from the starter relay engage but nothing. Also lost all power to car (lights, etc.).
I at first suspected the starter relay and relpaced this. Since the batttery was old I replaced this as well. The next thing I noticed is that if I disconnected the battery and then reconnected, the power was back (could turn on lights and also ignition). However if I then tried the ignition then everything went dead again. This lead me to disconnect the cable from the relay to the starter motor. Leaving this off I now had lights ALL the time and power and could engage the ignition switch and hear the solenoid engage on the starter relay.
Soooooo, this lead me to believe the starter was bad and was causing the issue. Replaced the starter as well and same issue as before. No power once the ignition is engaged, just kills everything, but if I disconnect the battery, power is back. Or if I disconnect the cable to the starter motor, power is back for as long as it stays diconnected.
My next ideas are the cable to the starter motor or the voltage regulator, but I am really at a loss. ANY ideas would be VERY welcome....
