1976, I was 19, never owned a car and had just gotten my license because my Sargeant made me. Mom let me borrow $2000.00 to buy a used car. Well, as a Marine, all but, $500 of that went to partying and alcohol and wimmenZ. I was almost broke.

Met a guy that was transferring out. He said he had an old junker that ran really good and wanted to sell it. He wanted $700 for it.

We went to go see it and he opened the garage door and I saw this red beast looking like it was going to run right out of the garage and smash us both in place.

He started her up and she had that rumble, you know, with the glass packs? She had chrome slotted rims and 50s in the rear helped by extended shackles and standard size tire/rims in the front painted red.

I looked her over and offered him $350 since she was not really all that (yeah, it was a lie but, I was dickering here..gotta get a better deal). He hemmed and hawed and pretended to be surprised and I knew he was leaving the next day. He either had to pay up or simply lose the car.

He cocked his head to the side and said what about $450, I immediately countered with $400 and he said "Deal!" I drove her right off to the car wash and began soaping her up and down...okay...almost too far.

She took me all over the place, I had mostly been a city boy during my teen years so we used public transportation and the new freedom this sweet looking red girl gave me made me feel like a million bucks!!

And then...there was this thing she could do, cruising down the highway doing bout 50mph, another hot car pulled up beside us...and revved the engine...so, I slapped her in neutral and did some revving also..then the other guy stomped on it and started to leave us in the dust...so, I slammed her into 1st gear and just plowed my foot through the floorboard.

For a nano-second she seemed to almost crouch down in the rear and then the front end would raise just a little...and then...the rear tires gave out a little holler and she growled at the top of her exhaust! And before I knew it we were passing the sucker in the other car...!!!!

Yeah, she was almost always fun....love..not sure I would call it that back then..maybe pride at having something that could take me places both on and off the road and that made smiles on the inside.Drink_to_that

I use to run from North Carolina to Bridgeport Connecticut as often as I could and a often as I could afford the gas eater that she was....one time, on a dark and windy Saturday morning while in CT she let out a funny noise and died. I got a tow to the house where my sister lived and parked her on the city street.
Since I had to make it back to base before 5:00 am reveille or, 7:30 Formation, Monday morning I went in the house, picked up my back pack and got to hitch-hiking back to North Carolina. It was December then and yes, it was colder than a witch's teat. I remember catching a ride with a fellow service man but, he had his family...and a single cab pick up truck...talk about wind chill...sorry, that's another story.
Anyway, told my sister, before I left, that I would be back in two paydays to pick my Red Girl up and take her back with me. So...time goes by....
I hitched hiked back three weeks later cause I had run into some money and needed to get my baby back.
I somehow talked my Sergeant into letting me have a 4 day pass and started out hitch hiking again to save the money for my baby. Yeah, it was still cold, yeah, I wish I could have paid for a plane ticket but, that's just the way it was...took two full days this time to get back.
I arrived at the end of my sister's street and had 8 blocks to walk. I started walking faster to see her. As I got about a block away there was this big azz truck parked behind my girl so I couldn't even see her as I approached...within 50 feet I saw she was not there at all. It was just an empty spot with a large oil stain and drag marks left by a locked rear end of a car. My car was gone!!!!!
I slammed my fist into my sister's door over and over again and didn't care that is was 4 in the morning...I wanted to know where I could see her. My brother in law came out cussing and I brushed past him into the house yelling "Where the HELL is my car?" My sister, still rubbing sleep-dust out of her eyes..blinks and says..."That was your car? The city came by here a couple days after you left and wanted to know who's car it was. I told them I didn't know and they towed it off."
Uh...er...uh..mmmm, well, my mouth fell open and since it was Saturday I had a heck of a time getting information as to where my car was impounded.
Yeah, I found her...practically stripped of complete interior, new 50 series tires, engine and transmission and driver side door. The guy said for $700, since I didn't have the title with me..he would sell it to me for what storage had cost so far.
So...SIGH...that is a sad but, true story of my first 1969 Mustang Mach 1 M Code Candy Apple Red car. Over the years I had always thought of her and the short fun time we had together...yeah, maybe it was love but, back then that sounded too girly...yeah, it was PC to say stuff like that back then....
No..no pictures..only what is still stuck in my head...Drink_to_that
