There is usually a tag on the rear end, held in place by one of the nuts, that will have a code. You can also look at the data plate on the door. If all that fails, mark one of the wheel studs, and it's position in relation to the backing plate, and then turn the yoke until the axle makes one full turn. If you count the number of full and partial turns (i.e., 1.5 turns) of the yoke, and then multiply by 2, you will have the approximate rear end ratio (in this case 3.00:1).

There is no tag on the axial. I will have to do your method. Thank you for the quick reply. Need to pick out a cam and I need the gear ratio.

Divide the number of teeth on the ring gear by the number of teeth on the pinion. This will give you your ratio.
