There is a a 71 Mach 1 on ebay and the owner says it is an M code. What does that mean? Also what would you all say this is worth???

Thanks

Wade the M code in 1971 is the 351C 4V motor. The same motor qualification as a Q code in 1973. The higher output 351C choice than the standard 351C 2V.

THanks Steven! Is there a place where these codes are documented so I can know what I am looking at before I buy something? Also what did you think of the car and the price he is asking for it on ebay..

Wade,

Try this site for your basic VIN decode: http://iml.jou.ufl.edu/projects/students/blommel/71.htm

Here is a more complete site. Go to decoder and enter your year. http://classicponycars.com/index.html

My personal opinion is that his $8,000.00 "Buy it now" is high for a Tennessee car in that condition. Look for rust issues especially in the cowl area. (Take a powerful flashlight, remove the plastic leaf protectors and look both right and left and/or also contort yourself to look up under the dash behind the glove box.) This is the hardest fix area for these cars and no reproduction pieces are currently available. Look at floors (if the cowl area is rusted more than likely the front floor will also be gone). Also check frame rails and torque boxes.

Have fun hunting.
M code I think the person is talking about the motor . But the M did not come out untill I beleave 75 and that was in a Ford 400 ci that was destrocked to a 351 in a 400 block . Do a little checking I may be wrong . C . L .
The engine code "M" should be in the fifth position of the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). The information I have shows that there was a "Q" code in 1971, which is a 351-4V Ram Air and the "M" code is a 351-4V. The "Q" code is generally agreed upon to be more desirable, even though the "M" code is a great engine.

The sticker on the drivers door should have more data codes on it, including the transmission. A code "5" would be a Four-speed Manual (2.78:1) and a code "6" would be a Four-speed Manual (2.32:1)

I think the buy it now price of 8K is a little steep for that condition, but its hard to tell unless you see it in person. Good luck with your search!
My 71 Mach1 is an M code car. The engine is a 4v cleveland with 2 bolt mains and closed chamber heads. The rated compression is 10.75.It's a very strong engine.I've had it to 6000 rmp without any problems other than not enough fuel flow (with stock fuel system) at high revs.

M code was 70 and 71 351 C 4V hi compression closed chamber heads, 2 bolt mains [ unless it was a 71 Boss ]
Ram air was an option
At the end of 71 the Q code [ 72 motor ] was introduced lower compression but 4 bolt main.
