Some of you may have seen in other forums that I'm currently looking for a Mach 1 project car with a manual trans. I would like to eventually install a 5-Speed in the car and run a low rear diff; something like a 3:90 or even a 4:30. But I would also like to make the car appear to be factory original as possible. So, is it possible to make a T-5 look like it's a '69 or '70 factory stick?

I dont' know much about transmissions. Based purely on observation, it appears to me the shifting mechanism for a T-5 is internal while the older Ford manual transmissions had an external shifting linkage. This gets me to wondering if I could, for example, have a Hurst stick machined to replicate the T-5 stick. Has anyone ever heard of such a setup? Or, am I just spewing science fiction here?

Thanks!
My son and I put a T-5 in his 71 Maverick. As you can see in the pictures the T-5 has a small shifter shaft. We were able to buy a Maverick Grabber Hurst shifter from a junk yard and bolt it to his T-5. I believe it is Summit (so others as well) sell a 5 speed replacement cue ball. Looks like a factory set up. Sorry, I could not find a picture of the completed setup.
Hey, that's very helpful, Steven. The pictures perfectly illustrate how many different shifters could just bolt onto that little stub. It should be easy to find something factory-looking for that.

And I bet that Maverick is a cool street machine. My brother has a buddy who used to drive a Maverick street racer. (By no means am I advocating street racing.) He bolted a set of 351W heads onto that '71 Maverick's factory 302 and stabbed in a lumpy cam to create a very stock looking, yet very surprising, street fighter. Many a Camaro driver was launched into the depths of despair after getting spanked by that Maverick I can tell you.
Thanks Klutch,

The Maverick turned out nicely and is very fast.

Here is a video of it's first run. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PekBsPVrHGQ
Hey Klutch great idea I infact have just that in my 70 and there are only a couple of mods to do one if you get a conversion kit it will come with everything you need but the hole in the floor for the shifter needs to be made alittle larger on the right side as well as the shifter handle itself the holes there have to be larger other than that you will be good to go and oh ya it works great

Steven, I can't get the video to play, it says "This Video is Private"
Sorry guys,

Computers are not my forte. I think it should work now. Let me know if it still doesn't play.
It works now. The Maverick sounds sweet!

Thanks, Lloyd. Would you recommend the kit you used? Where did you get it? And of what does such a kit consist? I'm wondering if it requires some type of adapter plate. I'm looking at a 70 Mach 1 with a 351 Cleveland. I'm hoping a T-5/International 5-Speed would bolt right up to the engine.

I watched the Maverick video, Steven. Very nice! Is gas still pretty cheap south of the border?

Currently it is a little cheaper than the U.S. (southern Arizona) but the cost has been increasing each week. I imagine that will continue till it catches the U.S. price. They must believe in cutting the dog's tail off a little at a time so not to cause too much pain all at once. Rofl
