Mach 1 Club

It's not a Mach 1, but the same style door and weatherstrip! I posted on another Mustang site and thought I would post here too.

I'm ready to install new weatherstriping on the doors of my 73 Convertible. This is the piece that starts at the bottom of the glass and goes down the side of the door, underneath the door then back up the front side of the door. There are 2 screws that hold it on at the front and four screws at the top of the back side of the door. The bottom of the door has a channel about 2/3's the length of the door in the center. The old weatherstrip had adhesive on it. The question is do you put the weatherstrip adhesive on the door, then install the weatherstrip or do you put the adhesive on the weatherstrip first then install. Any tips, I don't want to end up getting adhesive all over me or the new paint!

Steps to ensures a good bond between your car and the new weatherstripping.
* Choose an appropriate work area and have patience.
* Make sure you have a large protected space to work in.
* Don't let yourself be rushed by the weather.
* Allow yourself plenty of time.
* A quality weatherstrip replacement can be a day long project depending on the amount of weatherstripping replaced.
* Think it through. Don't rush yourself by starting the project at night if you need the car the following morning.

I've usually had the best results by applying the adheisive sparingly to both surfaces, letting it tack off, and then carefully position the weatherstrip and tape it to hold it in place. I let it dry for a full day before messing with it. Also, temperature above 60 degrees helps keep the rubber pliable and aids in curing the adheisive.

Thanks for the tips. I think I will fit it first without adhesive to make sure it fits. Then proceed with the adhesive.

gxr02190, I'm real happy with the quality of the paint job!

The best way I have found is
Screw on both ends
Let it hang down, start gluing the middle off the hanging section and work it both ways so you can loose slack or stretch it as necessary. Usually you will have to lose some.
3M w-strip adhesive, goes on door and w-strip, works like contact cement.

Don, That sounds like a good approach, I'll give it a try. By the way some of your parts are on my 73 Convertible. The center caps on the factory aluminum wheels are from your shop. Thanks, Mike

I just replaced the weather stripping on my doors & also changed the window fuzzies. I used 3m super tacky adhesive which always works great.

Was you weather stripping the correct length or did you have to shorten?

I bought the scott drake kit & it fit pretty nice. Didnt have to modify anything other than the fuzzie metal trim as it was a bit too long

I also just replaced my door weather seals , They fit correctly , not sure who made them as they came from NPD.
Anyhow , I used a small artists brush to put my adhesive on and it worked out great , I was able to keep it where I needed it and no over flow.
I didn't use the 3M stuff , I used the contact cement for formica tops , it holds and won't come off.
