If you are a sports car enthusiast who owns a hot rod such as a Mustang or other high-priced modified car, you have most likely spent hundreds of hours modifying it with many expensive additions. The detail and work you put into a modified car not only makes driving this pimped out vehicle exciting, but it also takes a lot of time and money. Anything that is added to a car to improve its performance, or increase its value, is considered a modified car. Once you have made the modifications, you will have to make changes to your car insurance policy.

The changes to your car insurance policy will need to take into account any modifications or upgrades to ensure your investment and all of its parts are completely protected. Your modifications will affect your insurance rates and coverage. If your current insurance company will not cover your modifications, there are insurance providers that specialize in insuring modified cars. When submitting your changes and additions to the insurance company, you have to provide such information as: the value of the car after modifications, changes to the engine’s performance, any safety feature additions or changes, mileage, brake system, expensive additions such as tire rims and a pricey stereo system, where you park the car overnight (in a garage or curb side,) and any anti-theft devices.

It is important to remember that if you are not completely covered for the modifications such as the addition of new and expensive parts, you will not be compensated if you have to make a claim. As well, if you don’t report all of the changes and the insurance company finds out, they will likely void your policy. When looking for specialized insurance for your Mustang or any other type of modified car, you need to do your research. The internet is a great tool to locate insurance companies that will insure modified cars. To get the most affordable insurance rates, it is important to compare at least 3 different quotes from different insurance providers. As well, if your car is so unique that you require specialized insurance, make sure you ask if they have any restrictions such as not insuring vehicles that contain engine modifications that make the car go faster.

The insurance needs for a modified car is different than for a standard car. After all of the time and money you put into your modified car, it is important to make sure it is completely protected so that you can relax and enjoy your head-turning hot rod.
