Full Version: Proper Steps for Painting Hood Moudling?

I just bought a replacment hood moulding piece from NPD and much to my chagrin it is light grey. Obviously to match my car it would need to be black so I'll paint it.

My question is, however, what is the proper procedure for best results? Right not there is a grey gloss paint on it so would I need to strip that, prime, paint and clear coat?

Or can I just paint over the grey and then clear coat?

Or do I even need to clear coat?

Thanks.
If I understand correctly, you have a hood that is already painted gray and already has clear coat?

If that is the case and you are trying to do the normal Mach 1 Hood color design, you will have to probably redo the hood completely.

You cannot add paint to a hood that's already clear coated, I mean I guess you can but it sounds to me like your just wanting to add the black accent. I don't know how you will sand down the clear coat in just a section to add the black. You might be able to tape everything else off, but I just don't see how you can do it that way. Seems like it would be a hassle for the painter.

Am I understanding you correctly? Confused

Hopefully some painter guru here sees this. I know a little about paint but only enough to know I cant do it. Laughing
Haha no no, let me explain...

As it stands right now, there is no moulding on my hood. I have a generic grey piece that I wish to paint and attach to my hood. My hood is currently black with the grey metallic "stripe" (if you will) over the center of the hood to include the scoops but the grey stripe tapers off before it reaches the front of the hood so that is a non-issue.

To be consistent with other M1s I have seen, the moulding should be painted the color of the car, not the accent paint, so I wish to paint it black and then attach it to my hood.
Ok guess photos will help here Wink

I just painted mine black for now since the whole car needs repainting.

Well my quesiton was if I needed to strip the grey paint on the moulding before I painted it black... but cool car! Rockxtreme

While we're at it though, can you take pictures of the fasteners you used to attach the moulding under the hood?
I would strip the paint off first, this is just my opinion, you might get away with roughing it up first before painting, but IMHO Id rather do it right the first time instead of having a redo, mine just came primered.

Those my friend are a pain in the tush to deal with, also if you tighten them to tight they will indent the top part of that trim. Been there done that! I also recommend using the BLUE loctite when you install them. I didn't at first and they got loose fast and that trim piece rattled. After using loctite its been solid now for over 6 months.

Ill try to get a photo soon, its absolutely pouring right now in the southwest, and I cant really get to the front of the Mach, but I used tiny little acorn nuts bought them at Checker/O'Reilly.
If you needed these same pieces done on the fenders they are an absolute bitch to remove and getting them back on is impossible. I had to take my fenders off the car and it was still a bitch.

This place called SpaceAge Paint has been an invaluable source of odd parts for the Mach 1. they can be a huge help in finding the weird fasteners used in older cars.
The original nuts are the acorn style. I bought new ones from CJ Pony parts for around $7 for the set. I do not have a close-up picture but you can make them out in this picture. The molding was painted separately from the hood so the nuts are unpainted.

Man that's one clean underside of the hood!!!
