I'm trying to restore my 1971 Mach 1 as close to factory stock. My question is concerning the rear package tray. Was is painted fiberboard or had a different finish. Also were the rear speakers flush mounted or raised type? Thanks.
Id like to help here but I guess mine doesn't have a package tray. I'm interested in seeing someone that knows this answer please include a photo!

Darn another thing I didn't know I had to do!!

This is what the back of my 1973 looked like before I removed the interior this summer. Hope it helps.

Were any of those speakers factory installed? Cars with a rear shelf may had had factory rear speakers but I have never seen a fastback with a fold down rear seat with factory installed speakers. I seem to recall there being cutouts where your speakers are mounted and they are the same brown color so maybe they are original.
No back speakers were offered in any of the mustang body styles or trim levels. The radio options were AM, AM-8 Track stereo and Am/FM Stereo. The base AM radio utilized a mono dash speaker mounted on the top. The optional AM-Track or AM/FM stereo radios came with door only speakers. Any speaker mounted in the rear package shelf were installed by a subsequent owner.
I can only say that this is what was in mine. If they were installed after they received the car, they were professionally done. Holes cut perfectly, interior ginger paint matched perfectly.

I am new to the restoration of this car so I can not give you an accurate account of what you are asking. The folks on this list are my primary source of information and I trust what they post.
Guys, just want to say thanks. Now I know what to do. Thanks again, Bill
In seeing the picture of the 73. I am rebuilding a 73 at this time and did not know what the back looked like. I see that it has panels thet go all the way back to the rear partician. Does anyone know where I can purchase these panels. My car had been taken apart and stored for 14 years and some of the parts were missing when I bought it. Now the hard part trying to find the missing pieces. Thanks for any help.
RKL,

The normal go-to guy for these kind of parts is Don Witt at Ohio Mustang Supply: http://www.ohiomustang.com/

Give him a call and see if he can help you. The good thing about Don is that if he doesn't have what you are looking for he is always helpful to suggest other possible solutions.
