If a Boss 302 Mustang isn’t fast or exclusive enough for you, but you can’t quite swing the payments on a Grand-Am ready Boss 302R, Ford Racing may soon have some good news for you. They’re apparently working on a track-only Boss 302S version, which will slot in above the Boss 302 but below the Boss 302R in terms of both performance and pricing. Expected to be announced at next week’s Performance Racing Industry trade show, the SCCA World Challenge / NASA America Iron legal Boss 302S will have a starting price of $79,000.

That money buys you a serious track-day weapon. The 302S comes with the same engine as the Boss 302R, a 5.0 liter V8 good for 444 horsepower, mated to a six speed transmission. To handle the stress of track day abuse, it’s fitted with an oil cooler and an upgraded cooling system. The suspension uses a coilover setup in all four corners, with adjustable swaybars in the front and rear. The brakes use Brembo four piston calipers up front, grabbing 14” rotors. The rears are standard issue Ford calipers, grabbing 12” rotors, and both the brake booster and ABS calibration are set up for track use. For safety, each car comes with an FIA spec roll cage, a HANS-ready Recaro seat, a six point harness and a fire suppression system. As you’d expect in a track-only car, the Boss 302S also comes with a GPS equipped AIM data acquisition system.

If there’s a downside to all this, it would have to be availability. Ford Racing is only building 50 copies of the Boss 302S, which means you’d better have some serious pull with Ford Racing to get one.
