Full Version: Lower Ram Air Assembly Problem

Sooooooo I have a nice fat Edelbrock intake manifold on my 351C 2V and it's so big that I can't mount a traditional lower ram-air assembly because the aftermarket intake makes it sit too high.

Any ideas?
what I want to say is sell me your ram air system. Other than that, I don't know what to suggest.
I ran a 4bbl intake manifold on my 2 bbl Cleveland with ram air w/o any problem but I guess mine was the stock height. Wink I have never found a distributor that would fir with the 351 4V intake/motor I have in the car now.Crazy
I guess you have a decision to make. Personally I'd lose the intake and put the Ram Air on, but then I think the Ram Air is the cats ass cool. Cool
So it is a 2v or 4v manifold. I had a 351c 2v and changed the manifold to the elbrock performer the excepts a 4 barrel carb. Had to issues with ram air setup either way I would go to low profile manifold. The ram air setup is very desirable
I'm not familiar with your ram air setup. But I'll throw this out. Ram Air systems are nice. But if the filter it uses is anything like the Shakers on the 69 and 70 Mustangs, it is too small. I would also consider the filter options before deciding what to do. With a small filter and stock or Edelbrock Performer intake you may give up hp to fit a Ram Air setup under the hood.

Best Regards,
Mike
Ok, after reading the post I came up with a few questions and solutions.

First is this an original OEM ram air assembly or aftermarket?
I know for the 69 and 70 mach 1 cars the aftermarket lower pans are taller than OEM on the cleveland cars and dont really look right as they are universal small block fitment.

The original intake manifolds are required or you can substitute a close proximity with the blue thunder manifold which I hear is close in design to the shelby units.

A low profile eldebrock should work fine. Or else I have a cleveland stock 4 barrel manifold ill sell for a hundred bucks plus shipping, buts its heavy.
Ill think you will be wanting a lighter aluminum one.

With the 71 through 74 fastback and Mach 1 cars the air plenum set up requires a tight seal around the hood opening for a good fitment.
Use a K&N air cleaner top with the stock sized air filter to gain back more air flow as a solution to air flow problems.
Those cars look wierd with any holes cut in the hoods anyhow in my opinion.

Second: Is the power gains from that taller intake on there now that big of a deal breaker?
Have you thought of playing with larger unrestricted exhaust or headers or better ignition system?
You may find that other upgrades will cancell out the want for that few 20 or so HP gain in the long run. (Tilt steering wheel, or A/C, or traction lock rear end etc etc...)

I love the look of the original ram air set up even on those large mustangs. The ducts just look awesome.Biggrin
Best wishes....
