Back in 1996 when the Dodge Viper GTS came out it was America’s most powerful sports car pumping out 450 hp from it 8.0-liter V10. The Shelby Daytona-esque styling is simply beautiful and in my opinion it’s the most attractive Viper to date. Back then the Viper was a simple car that adhered to a simple formula. Less weight, more power with basic creature comforts to appease the owners. The Viper was never intended to be a long distance hauler, but a devastatingly fast rip-roaring and wicked handling muscle car. American based sports cars have always concentrated on performance first and interiors later so as to keep the cost of production down. Sure it’s got plastic all over the place, and sure it’s about as comfortable as an ox-cart, but at the end of the day it will still do 0-60 in 4 seconds flat and top out at over 175 mph. The GTS is one of those rare American cars that will always be cool, beautiful and in demand. My hope now though is that Dodge has something very special planned for the Vipers relaunch in 2013. A new GTS model perhaps? We’ll see…
