I suppose it’s time to officially put the 2011 Chevrolet Volt and the 2011 Nissan Leaf on notice as Ford has announced that they will have an all electric, newly redesigned Focus on sale by the end of next year. The new 2012 Ford Focus electric is said to have a range of 100 miles, about the same as the new Nissan Leaf. It is also a true electric car, as it has no range extender engine like the Chevrolet Volt.

What the Focus electric does have in leaps and bounds over the competition however is style – oodles and oodles of style. Let’s face it, one of the main reasons that consumers buy a car is for how it looks and makes them feel, and from a styling standpoint the Focus is just tits. By the time the Focus electric is released the Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt will have already been on the market for a full year, which from a strategy standpoint is a good thing for Ford. Keep in mind that there is no official data yet on how electric cars are going to sell in the United States. We know that via the market research conducted that electric cars should do great, but as of right now that’s really all we have to go on. Personally, I’m still not convinced that the American public is ready for electric cars, what I do know is that manufacturers like Nissan and GM will be sitting on eggshells waiting for the 1st quarter sales figures to come in. 2011 is going to be a very pivotal year for the electric car market, a very pivotal year.

Over the last 5 years Ford is the only motor company that has, in my opinion fulfilled it’s obligations to the public. They didn’t take any government bailout money, they’ve got the most attractive line-up of any American car manufacturer, and from a performance and quality standpoint, their cars are fantastic. My 2008 Lincoln Navigator rocks, best luxury type SUV Ive ever owned.
