Nissan just announced the recall of 46,000 cubes built between January 30, 2009 and today. Based on semi-absurd NHTSA crash testing involving a 50 mph rear impact, followed by a slow 90 degree rollover, the Nissan cube was found to leak fuel from the filler neck, increasing the risk for a post-crash fire.
NHTSA test goes beyond any kind of realistic worst-case scenario. I’m sure the cube would also fail the “anti-tank mine” test, the “HEAT round fired from an M1 Abrams tank” test and the “drop of 10,000 feet from the back of a C-130” test, but I’d still be confident enough to drive a cube until my Nissan dealer could perform the recall work.

If you own a 2009 or 2010 cube, expect to hear from Nissan in the next month. The recall is expected to start by the end of August, and Nissan dealers will install a guard on the gasoline recirculation tube where it meets the fuel filler neck.
